I just picked this mower up used and I'm trying to figure out what the problem is.. The guy said it's 5 years old and could use a belt . It has newer drive tires.

The mower locks the rear wheels then trying to pull it back.
From the searching I did I found it could be. The rocker keys .
I took apart the left side which was also the one clicking and cleaned them all up. The pinion gear is very worn. And now that I think of it I don't recall seeing the friction on the left side. (maybe I missed it.)And reinstalled it with wd-40 temporary. The right side had no wear on the pinion gear.
On to the questions .
Am I on the right track thinking this is the issue?

Or do I just get what's needed.. I'm not really sure what wears out on this stiff.

Last question what do I lube the pinion gears up with?
