HOW HARD IS IT TO SWITCH FROM A KAWASAKI TO A KOHLER ON A SCAG ZERO TURN???

Need to replace my 31hp Kawasaki on a 60 scag cheetah. Would like to switch to a Kohler since Kawasaki will not replace a motor that blew a hole in the side even though it is still under warranty. (not a manufacturer defect is what they said) Been using zero turns since 99, change oil weekly, check oil daily, and they tell me I ran it low on oil. Wont ever buy another K motor again. Has anyone ever switched to a Kohler?

Well, as it seems all the pictures I have ever posted are now gone unless I want to pay Photobucket $399 a year.
Anyone know of an alternative way to post pictures?

Picked up a Kubota ZT

I picked up this 2016 Z121skh 48", 21 hp Kubota Komander? from a Co worker's sisters, it has 5.5 hours, paid $4000 for it, has all the paperwork, rop and led lights. Tried it out today for just a bit, going to the shop early Saturday for some serious mowing.

Gcv160 push mower engine fuel cap leak

A few years ago I bought a brand new lightweight push mower with the Honda engine on it and I really like the engines power.
Everything has been fine but it's always had a little bit of a fuel leak and it seems to be getting worse when I fill it up especially when doing the side Hills on the ditches.
I don't know why the cap is outsmarting me.... I screw it on until it clicks and I've looked at the surfaces inside the cap there's kind of a rubber diaphragm up inside the cap that seems to seal or supposedly seal against the plastic collar on the fuel tank.... I can't see any terrible imperfections on the plastic collar nor on the rubber inside the cap...

What am I missing?

is700z vs add a suspension seat

I've read some old posts from members saying that the small suspension on the is700z is really about the same as adding a suspension seat to a ztr without suspension.

All you who own the is700z - do you agree with that?

I am considering the is700z but only because of the suspension - I can do without the commercial grade engine, rops, and 3400 hydros - so I can get away with spending ~$1000 less and just add a suspension seat to another model (e.g. Gravely ZTHD or Husqvarna MZ).

I have also seen folks who own is700z shopping for suspension seats...so I'm really wondering if the suspension on teh is700z is really significant or not...or if you have to go to the 2100 to really be satisfied.

Thanks

Burning up forward drive belts! Help!

Hi All this is my first post on the forum, so bear with me if I make mistake in protocol,

I am very mechanically inclined as I am a car mechanic and small engine mechanic. I have a Ariens riding mower that's about 7 years old that was given to me as my friend didn't want to fix it and bought another mower. I have 3/4 acre that I mow with a push mower, so I was thrilled to get it. This is my first rider

Anyway, completely went through the deck and repainted, rebuilt it, did service to the engine, got new belt for the deck and began mowing with it. All was well for about 10 minutes and the transmission drive belt broke. I put it up on ramps and inspected the pulley system. One pulley was slightly off, so I realigned it. Springs are strong and intact. I installed a new Kevlar belt and away I went. Again, about 10 min later I smelled rubber and the belt came off and looked ripped to hell. Put it up on ramps and checked the hydrostatic trans pulley. It seemed a bit hard to turn in neutral going the forward direction, but much easier in the reverse direction. I noticed when the mower was moving that reverse was much faster than forward. It seemed to go a bit slower than walking speed in forward when the lever was all the way forward.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I am unfamiliar with Riding Mower transmissions, but want to learn.

Thanks for the help in advance. Have a great day! Aloha

16.5 Hp Lawn Tractor runs only on (nearly) full choke

16.5 Hp Lawn Tractor runs only on (nearly) full choke

I have an MTD lawn tractor (pretty old) with a B & S Model: 42A707
Type: 123801 engine (Opposed L Head Twin Cylinder).
It was running poorly, so I pulled the carburetor and did a complete rebuild;
I replaced all the part that were included in the rebuild kit except for the Welsh Plug,
which seemed tricky and I didn't see what replacing it would do.
I cleaned out all of the passages with aerosol carb cleaner and everything seemed in great shape.
I reinstalled the carb and fired up the engine.
It started right up and ran great, unless I tried to open the choke.
It seemed to me that it must be either starved for fuel on the carburetor intake,
or was leaking air into the cylinders downstream of the carburetor.
The carburetor rebuild went so well you would have a hard time convincing me (though it wouldn't be impossible)
that there was a clogged fuel passage somewhere in it.
On the other hand, I sprayed starter fluid around the carb, intake manifold connection points, etc while it was running
to see if it caused the engine to sputter, but it had no effect.
I considered that the head gaskets might be leaking air, so I tightened those bolts.
They were "not particularly tight" (pardon my technical language) when I got to them. Some were looser than others.
I tightened them all. I did not use a torque wrench. I didn't know what the proper torque would be.
I let the engine run for about ten minutes and it sounded great the whole time (with the choke on almost full).
It was not, however, under load operating the blades or the wheel drive.

I am pretty much at a loss now for what to do.
I suppose I can re-assemble the tractor and just (try to) use it while leaving the choke mostly on full.
That somehow seems wrong to me.

Anyone have some advice?

My 3 lawnboys

Here are my 3 lawn boys.

On the left is my 2001 10550. I bought this slightly used in 2003. In 2006 or so I went to start it for the first time of the season and it ran for 10 seconds and died. I parked it for 4-5 years and was gonna trade it for something else. They hardware store in town basically said we'll take it off your hands. I then decided I have 2 lawn boys ,why not get them both going. I tore into the 10550 and found I had scored a piston . I then put a new piston and rings in and has run perfect since. The pilot jet has since been replaced with a 42.5 Briggs. I am so glad I decided to keep this as it runs great now.

Next is a 7260 deck. ( original was cracked and I can't remember what model number was) D600. My dad bought this used in the mid eighties and I mowed lawns in late 80s- early nineties. It then layed in my dads garage until I moved out in 2001 and acquired this mower. The deck was cracked and I found another from the hardware store junk pile. I used this from 2001-2003 when the governor started acting funny. I then got my 10550 and parked this til 2010 or so. I then pulled this back out and fixed the governor. It now runs perfect and still has 90 psi compression.

Last is a 1978 7268 that I scored at a rummage sale for $10. I brought it home and started first pull. Then it sat in basement for 2-3 years and when I drug it out wouldn't start. I decided to do a full on rebuild and put new piston rings and all. I got new decals for tank and painted all up.

I now use all 3 mowers in the rotation

This is my first post so I thought I would make it some eye candy for you. Thanks for having me aboard.

314 John Deere with kohler 14 hp.

hello from mowToro.

I was prompted to sign up for Lawn Mower Forum because of some recent intermittent stating problems with a Toro 252L Zero turn mower. The original starter lasted 13 years. But I now on my second rebuilt starter within a four year period. Now this one is acting up. Sometimes it starts fine. Other times it acts as if the battery is weak, which is not the case. After four or five tries it finally turns over and starts. Could it just be a weak solenoid. Should I try to order one directly from a Toro dealer rather than an aftermarket place?

hello from mowToro.

Craftsman Pushmower Starts ONCE with Electric starter and then you have to pull start

I have had this mower for about 5 years. It always key started just fine until this summer. This summer, we would turn the key and it would spin and start ONCE....then, after that, it might start with the key, but more often, we had to use the pull cord. I thought the battery was getting weak and replaced it...It made no difference....it would start the first time ok and then just occasionally with the battery after that..
Looked up everything I could on line to do...did it all...checked the electrical connectors, spark plug changed, air filter cleaned...Made no difference...BUT, we discovered that IF we pumped the primer button about twice before the second attempt to use the electric starter, it would start up just fine...So now overtime we shut it down, we push the primer twice and the electric starter works and starts the engine every time...

In my mind it must be a fuel issue...or not...I would say it was a dirty fuel filter, if it had a fuel filter...
Any thoughts or ideas...???
THANKS..

ferris is700z vs gravely zthd vs MZ61

I know these mowers aren't exactly in the same class, but I need help comparing just how much better the ride is for the Ferris is700z to see if its worth the money.

Ferris is700z 61 = ~6000
husqvarna MZ61= ~4750
gravely zthd =~5199 (or Ariens apex 60 for 5k...same mower)

I know I can get a suspension seat for the gravely or the husq for about 200. So that compared to the is700z suspension - is the difference dramatic or not? I don't think I can justify spending the money on the is2100 which i know would be nice.

I have 4 acres to cut - used to be hay field - so its not a subdivision lawn - not smooth. I'm using a 72" finish mower now @ about 4.5 mph. I need a ztr for various reasons.
I don't really NEED the larger hydros, commercial engine, ROPS on the Ferris - but of course those justify the price diff as well...I'm really only looking at it due to the suspension.

Anyone who has experience on the is700z vs a non-suspension mower of equal or lesser price - please let me know your opinion.

Thanks.

My lawnmower stopped working where do I begin to look?

I was mowing the lawn which is about 3 feet high today and the darn thing stopped. I could not restart it and it is full of gas and oil. It tried but doesn't turn over.

Where do I start to look for the cause. I vaguely know it could be the spark plug, carb but little else. I am not a handyman and it takes a while to find someone to help.

If it is a simple fix like spark plug maybe I can do it else I am stuck.

Advice appreciated.

Engine 16hp walker mower Valve Covers

I have a low hour (< 300) 16hp walker mower that has been well taken care of. However recently it has started to backfire when I shut it off. Looking at the engine, it seems that I'm getting an oil leak from one of the valve covers. Can I assume that this just needs a new gasket? Is it relatively easy to do this job?

Last ... would a leaking valve cover explain all of the following symptoms:
- an oil fouled spark plug just below the valve cover
- backfiring when the engine shuts off
- engine misfiring while mowing (but not so much just driving)

Thanks

Transmissons Stuck in Gear! Three of them.

I have three older Craftsman 42" riders, the green body ones, a 1976, 1977 & 1980, which all three have the same problem. After setting outside, covered with a tarp, the transmissions are all locked up in gear and will not shift.
I knew it probably is related to the weather, a lot of rain here the past month or so. Two of them are stuck in first gear. Yesterday wanted to use the 1980 model, but could not get it out of first gear.
All of the three mowers are build by AYP for Sears & very much alike, thus similar problems with the transmissions. I think they all have Peerless transmissions, but have not checked to be sure.

The question is: Is this a linkage frozen issue or internal issue? I have not tried any lubrication on the linkage, raining again today & forecast for the next few days.
I do have a nearly new mower, but like the older ones because of large 3 bin grass bagger system on them.

Thanks!

Kohler CH20-64510 Does the exhaust valve need a valve stem seal?

Good Day All! I was talking to a friend and the subject of Kohler engine rebuilding came up. Last winter I rebuilt the 20 HP in my Grasshopper 720k, and the parts only came with 2 valve seals. So I just picked up 2 more and rebuilt the engine with valve oil seals on both the intake and exhaust valves. Runs Great! Been using it all year so far. My buddy says I need to remove the valve stem seals from the exhaust valves. He says the small amount of oil is needed to cool the hot exhaust valves. My repair manual wasn't much help on this subject, so I'm here to ask the experts! What do you all think?

john deere stx38 won't turnover

I have a 1985 STX38 and while I was mowing one day, it shut down like I turned the key off. No power to anything. I was having trouble with the PTO kicking out before this happened if that tells you anything. I did find 2 wires that are not hooked anywhere. One is a black wire that is part of the PTO harness and the other is a black cable like a ground cable. Where should these be hooked? Thanks.

Violent shaking John Deere JS20

My John Deere JS20 has been giving me trouble with this for a long time, and now that I've fixed the self propel and replaced the flywheel and key (it was totally destroyed, flywheel spun on the crank) it is still shaking.
It runs perfectly fine, maybe starts and stops a little quicker than before replacing everything, but it runs fine. Only problem is the shaking. I thought it maybe had a bent crankshaft, but after looking at it, I'm not sure that it does. I figured after discovering the flywheel key had sheared off that it was the issue, but the shaking is still there after replacing it. I checked the debris shield under the drive belt, and I cleaned it and tightened it up, so that's not the problem.
Are there any other things that are known to cause this kind of shaking on these mowers? I can't see anything else that could be a problem.

PICS: Are these normal for my mower? (33114S)

Taking a look around, I found a couple of things that seem a bit off to me.

First, is a picture of the chain case. Around the shaft is a C-shaped mark that, to me, looks like it could be the chain and sprocket in the final stages of wearing through this half of the case. It doesn't seem to be thin enough to bend it, though...is it supposed to be there?

Chain Case.jpg

Second, is the clutch adjustment spring. From the parts catalogs I've found online, it looks like I'm missing some parts that the spring should be attached to. Can someone confirm?

As comparison for the second picture, here is the page of the parts catalog I've been looking at and I think that reference number 14 is missing some bits on mine.

How do i pull the fuel pickup tube out of the tank on my 2000 725K? I kinda pulled on it the other day trying to take it out but didn't want to break anything. Clutch cable part number help (33114S)

So I found out that my clutch cable is pretty badly frayed now and needs to be replaced.

I've found two part numbers that both claim to be for my mower, but one is for a "Shore tube," and the other for a long one, but I can't find anywhere in online manuals referencing this.

Anyone know what the difference is between the length of the long or short tube style so I can get this thing working properly again?

Even a call to Partstree didn't solve this one, and I thought for sure they'd know.

Honda 1011 Ignition Switch Problem?

I tried to start my Honda 1011 riding mower this morning. The key will not move into the starter position. Only from off to on and no further. Does this mean its a bad ignition switch? Or is it thinking that something is not set right such as the brakes. Everything was set correctly. I had my wife double check me in case I had a brain freeze or something.

If it is a bad ignition, does that change out easily?

Thanks Much

Hayter Osprey clutch

I have an old (1980s at a guess) Hayter Osprey rough cut mower.
The problem I have is the previous owner covered the drive chain in greese but went a bit over board doing so. Now from what I see the clutch slips so bad it won't propel its self along as the clutch slips so much.
Being so old I haven't been able to locate a new drive sprocket/ clutch plate. (They are the same unit, a fibre plate on each side of the sprocket)
Not knowing how much fibre plate should be on each side of the sprocket I'm unsure if the clutch requires replacing or not. There's a good 5 or 6mm if not more on each side of the sprocket so I'm guessing that that should be enough to operate the machine. Is this the case or should it be thicker?
Assuming there's plenty of clutch plate there & the only reason it won't power itself along is due to greese on the plates would it be possible to soak the clutch plate / sprocket in something like brake & clutch cleaner to remove all traces of greese?? I wiped it with carb cleaner quickly & put back together where it worked for a short period of time however it soon started slipping again to the point of me pushing the mower along which is far from ideal bearing in mind how big & heavy these old mowers are.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks Stu

Honda Hr214 & Hr216 help please

Hi. I've got a couple of old Honda mowers both Hr sereis Hr214 & Hr216. My questions are I've read about fitting a mulching plug or side discharge shoot to them.
Ideally I would like to keep one mower for collecting the cuttings but really want the other as a side discharge/ mulching mower for rough ground etc. Is this simply a case of finding a plug & fitting double blades to said mower?? Or is there more to this that I don't know about?
If it's not straight forward to convert it to a mulching mower is the side shoot just a plastic shoot that replaces the collection bag? These Honda mowers have a good amount of force blowing the cuttings into the bag so I'm guessing there's enough force to blow the cuttings out of a side shoot, is this the case or is there something I'm missing?
My reason for wanting to modify one of the mowers is I have an area of rough ground to cut on a weekly basis that I don't intend picking the cuttings up. At the moment I use my old Hayter Hayterette rough cut mower which is ok however I would prefer to have a self propelled machine to save me pushing it along as its a fairly large area of grass to cut each week.
Any help would be great.
Thanks Stu

2004 John Deere GT235 For Sale! $1,900

Need Help Reviving a 2004 225/61 Barn Find!!??

I just purchased a 2004, 225/61 GH and am in need of some assistance in getting it running. It had been sitting for 5 years. First thing I did was replace the battery and tried to start it. After a few tries it fired up and ran (surprisingly) but shut off after about 10 seconds. I believe I ran it out of gas. Anyway, I put 5 gallons of new gas in it but it will not fire anymore. I think it is either not pumping gas or I flooded it. I have ordered a new fuel pump and am replacing the plugs. I am replacing the fuel filter. The air filters are good. I am changing the oil/filter this weekend. If it is flooded, what is the best way to correct this problem?

2016 Hustler 52 vs 2017 Hustler 52

I am in the market for a new mower. I currently mow approx. 2 acres of hilly lawn in East Tennessee (not steep). My current mower is a Cub Cadet 52" lawn mower (not zero turn). It takes approx. 2 hours to mow everything.

My father, who lives next door, recently purchased a Kubota 72" diesel mower, wow that thing is amazing, but VERY Expensive.

I was looking at the Hustlers last year, and seen they currently have on their website you can finance for 48 months for 0% interest. I would have to get mine from Lowes though, I'm not sure of a dealer around here.

The Dilemma:

I found a 2016 Hustler 52, lady says they are moving and don't want to take it with them, no hour meter, but stating used less than 20 hours. I believe it has the Kohler engine. They are asking $2,200 for it.

I can buy a brand new one from lowes with the Kawi engine for $2,800.

Is the warranty transferrable on the used one? I am assuming not. In a perfect world I'd love to have a 60" to mow quicker, as I don't have a lot of trees around my house, but im still assuming the ZTR will be quicker than my current mower.

Is the Kohler better than the Kawi, why did they change motors?

Repairs Scag Turf Tiger dies, won't restart

Hoping someone can help.

I have a Scag Turf Tiger with a Kohler 29 hp EFI motor that's about 3 years old. Occasionally when I set the brake and get off the mower, it will die and won't restart. Sometimes if I wait a half hour or so, it will restart, other times I'm towing it back to the storage building. Had a mechanic come out who told me it was the ignition switch which we replaced. Ran ok for a few weeks then it happened again. I replaced the ignition switch again and it ran ok for a couple of weeks. Now it's starting to do the same thing again. Both ignition switches were new from my local Scag dealer and were OEM.

I've jumpered the seat safety switch so it 's not that. When it doesn't start, I've jumpered the starter and it will turn over. When I turn the key on and it's dead, I've tried engaging the mower deck and it will click.

I'm a homeowner who cuts about 5 acres once a week. The mower is stored indoors and it hasn't been in the rain.

Any help would be appreciated.

Snapper Scrambler won't move

I have a Snapper Scrambler zero turn. At the end of the cutting season last year, I parked my mower in the garage. This year, I fired it up and went to pull out, but it wouldn't move. Getting no sounds or anything. Just the sound of the motor running. Checked the belts, all looks good. No oil spots on the ground, so I know there is no leak. Anything else to check? Never had an issue with it before. So got me stumped.

Exact model: Snapper Scrambler SZT18336BVE (control handles, not joy stick) (33in - 18hp Briggs)

new guy

Hi
I just finished registering for the forum and posted a question about carb springs.
OOPS-I suppose I should have introduced myself 1st.
I know about.....zero....on small engines (or any engines for that matter.)
But I am willing to try just about anything. I figure , hey, it's broke and won't start or run so how bad can I make it?
Anyway getting started on carb parts.
thanks

carburator springs

I have an MTD lawnmower with a Briggs and Stratton engine. The engine model number is 12H802, 0652-01
I am trying to repair it because it wouldn’t start. It has been sitting idle in the shed for a few years now.
I changed the needle seat and needle. I cleaned every crevice and hole with carb cleaner and a small piece of wire.
It starts but it still revs either too high or too low. It needs the springs for the throttle and governor.
I don’t know what or how many springs I need I don’t know where they go. . And I can’t find a good pic of this engine
Can anyone post a picture?
Thanks
Paul

Stumped- Scag 19hp boggs/power loss when engaging PTO

Am currently stumped. I have a Scag Tiger Cat 19hp Kawasaki, bought new in 2010. Engine was running perfect like it has before but suddenly it just started losing power and wants to die out when engaging the PTO. Drained all the gas and replaced with fresh premium high octane gas, added some Sea Foam, changed plugs, gas filter, removed carb and cleaned the jets, needle and cleaned bowl. Am waiting on bowl gasket as it tore when replacing. Checked seat switch with ohm tester and it checked out good. Pulled on main belt and all the blades turn pretty free then turned ignition on and engaged PTO switch on and had some resistance to clutch which I had already just reset to I believe it was(15 thousands. I did notice that one plug was a light brown on the right (looking at the engine from the back) and the plug on the left looked slightly darker. Will ck for spark tomorrow by pulling out plug and touching to block. Engine will start and run and blades will turn slow BUT looses power and wants to die when I engage PTO and try to cut grass even if it's short. Had another issue last year where the dealer changed the coil due to PTO would stop cutting but continue running then start cutting later. Don't want another $400 hit so I could really use some help. I'm a little hands on so not scared to try anything, just need some direction. Will most likely order a shop manual for this engine like I did for my small Kubota tractor. Thanks for any help you can send my way. Wife chomping at the bit to go out and cut grass on her mower. She really is missing it and my ears keep burning from hearing her. Thanks again.

Voltage at Solenoid

My dad's mower will not start, just happened out of the blue. John Deere SRX75 rider, about 1993 model.
Have 12 volts at (4 post) solenoid wire end from ignition per multimeter when key is turned.
Can jump from POS terminal to solenoid ignition post and it starts right up.
Replace wire on solenoid, turn key and nothing.

Can I be losing the 12 volts from the ignition for some reason when the load of the solenoid is put on it? This has me baffled since I always show 12 v coming through wire from ignition when key is turned but does not start when connected to solenoid. Have bent and wiggled wire while checking with meter and have constant 12v, have not removed ignition key switch assembly and tested for continuity.

thanks for any ideas or assistance

Briggs no spark, did i screw up my flywheel?

Hi all, I've been battling a no spark condition all week on my weed eater briggs engine 10t802 push mower.

Replaced spark plug, even replaced ignition coil, and still no spark.

I ruled out the kill wire by disconnecting it.

I also recently found out that the damn ignition module needs a small gap between the fly wheel about business card size. A few months ago i had to take the module out but put it back on the flywheel with no spacing. Somehow i guess the mower worked like this but i fear now the flywheel magnetism is gone.

One side of the flywheel is strongly magnetic but the other half is not at all. Is it supposed to magnetic all around? Can this cause no spark?

A bunch of old junky stuff. Big Murray mowers and some walk behinds. A few electric chainsaws and three Chinese generators. One electric snow blower which isn't bad. In fact, pretty good. All my electric stuff has a cord. The battery stuff is handy, but kind of pricey.

Craftsman Weed Eater

I have a Craftsman weed eater that stopped running after I switched it to True Fuel (40:1), it ran once with the new fuel, and hasn't since. Things I have done since, 1) Changed to regular (40:1) fuel, 2) Cleaned Carburetor 3) Changed primer bulb 4) Changed fuel intake line (not filter yet), 5) Changed recirculating fuel line 6) Replaced carburetor, so lets stop there, fired right up, ran for a moment, kept dying within minutes, on choke or off, continued that sequence for a while, then wouldn't fire period. 7) Changed spark-plug, and will not fire anymore.

I am looking for any other thoughts on what I can do. I appreciate any help. Any questions let me know.

Engine died while cutting, now won't restart

I have a Kawasaki FB460v on an old Ferris mower. It's one of the ones that has a pull-cord start, not electric.

I was cutting our grass this morning, and suddenly it putt-putted and died. Now it won't run for more than a few seconds every 10 minutes or so. Any ideas why?

Good Deal?

Picked up a 2005 Murray Lawn Tractor off of craigslist for free a few weeks ago. With the help of some kind folks here, managed to get it running and in good working order. It came with a bagger attachment too. It's not bad looking at all. The front grill was missing, so I just pop riveted in a section of wire window screen. My costs to get it running are listed below. They could have been lower if I knew what I was doing. Ended up frying the main harness somehow. After installing the new solenoid, I may have attached the ground in the wrong location. Anyway, when I went to start it, wire insulation started melting. The previous owner removed the fuse holder, but I had replaced it, so I'm not sure if the harness was damaged beforehand.

Item Cost
main harness 60.00
Battery 50.00
starter 40.00
Blades 36.00
fuse and holder 14.00
air filter 13.00
oil and filter 10.00
Key 9.00
starter solenoid 9.00
deck wheel 9.00
plugs and fuel filter 8.00
grease fittings 5.00
sping 1.50
Total 264.50

Gravely 460 Diesel 70 Amp Fuse Holder Melted

I have a Gravely 460 with the Kubota Diesel Engine. The mower is a little less than 3 yrs old. It has an inline fuse holder coming from the alternator with a 70 amp fuse. I assume this is some sort of fusible link? I was mowing yesterday and the mower just shut down and glided to a stop. I checked it over and found the 70 amp fuse had blown and the fuse holder was melted. Any ideas on what would cause this. I would think if the alternator was overcharging I would see other signs of this.

Giving a new life to my existing lawn!!!

Mulching is a very effective method for your garden as well as lawns. The advantages of mulching are vast and it increases day by day. Mulching retains the moisture, control the weeds, prevents soil erosion and maintain the soil rich with nutrients. Garden or lawns get a finished look with mulching. It also contributes to a green and healthy environment.
Mulching a lawn has a lot of benefits:
1) The first thing is the selection of a modern mower that is only made for mulching.
2) Cutting should be done every 7 days to avoid clumps.
3) Try to cut the lawn a little bit higher for tall grass to hide the clippings.
4) It is better to mulch late in the morning for the dew to dry or else the mower will not work well.
5) Try different mowing patterns every week.
I have a lawn in the backyard of my house. It was fully destroyed by weeds. I didn't know how to redevelop the existing lawn. Now I am planning to transform the lawn into a beautiful garden. I am looking for some native plant seeds and herbs for my garden. Is mulching beneficial for the dead lawn? Please share your valuable suggestions. Thanks for the time.

Wiring to a toro zmaster

Just purchased new intek 19 hp to replace kohler On toro zmaster 400.
Kohler had oil pressure switch, new Briggs does not.
new Briggs has carb soleniod, kohler did not.

Pic of Briggs wiring (red, orange, black, gray)
Red/orange - voltage reg?
Black - coil/plug
Gray - carb soleniod

Plug from mower (blue wire, white wire, pink wire)

IMG_0112.jpg

Blue wire from mower plug went to kohler voltage regulator
White wire from mower plug went to kohler coil.
Pink wire from mower, no other wire on kohler plug.

Thoughts on how to connect this engine to the mower?

For carb soleniod, does it simply need power to it to allow carb to function?

Strange problem

Hi My lawnmower has a B&s Intek Edge 1200 series engine that wont start.
I have tried everything, it is not the fuel side, that checks out ok.
I have replaced the spark plug, tested the kill swith, reset the coil gap, even reset the valve lash, and it still will not start, but the strange thing is it will start and run ok if I leave the spark plug tester connected.
The spark plug tester is the type that has a plastic tube with leads to connect it, and a light that flashes inside it when the plug sparks.
I have never seen anything like this before, it is a mystery to me, can anyone help please.

Mower deck TB30R Modifications

I modified that stupid short shift lever by adding about 7 inches of 3/8 ID steel tube. I welded a 3/8 threaded rod about 3 inches to the end and screwed the handle on that. The steel tube was tight enough on the shifter but I added a little blue rtv just for the heck of it.

Now I would like to add wheels to the deck to help with scalping but I don't know if anyone has done this or if the deck floats enough to be of benefit.

Any help would be appreciated.:confused2:

Lazer Z CT blowing fuses (both-one at a time)

While cutting one day the motor stopped. Checked fuses and one was blown (not sure which one now). Put in a new fuse and blew as soon as key turned to run. This continued to happen so we started to review all wiring for a short (nothing found). Have replaced switches along the way including the ignition switch and pto switch. Still have not found the problem. Tried turning key to start position and did not blow fuse until key went back to run position (starter did not move as well). Both fuses will blow (one at a time, whichever one is the weakest.) Any suggestions as to what to replace/check next?

Spit, Cough, Backfire, etc...

Hi all,

I have John Deere LX277 with all wheel steering. It was purchased brand new in year 2000. Other than the occasional carb needing cleaning, it's been operating flawlessly. For the past couple of weeks, if I run for more than an hour, the motor will begin to spit, cough, backfire (at least it sounds like a backfire), will clear up after a few seconds and then do it again but intermittently. Only this time the spitting, etc... will last longer before clearing itself. There is no set pattern to when it acts up. Perhaps some of you fine people on this forum can offer some advice as what and where to look for the problem. Thank you in advance for the help. Roger

Briggs and Stratton 126T02-0301-B1 motor won't idle but runs at full throttle.

Hi everyone new guy here and could really use some help. I got this power washer from my father who used it twice and put it away. It has a briggs and stratton 126T02-0301-B1 motor on it. So far I have tried changing the oil, cleaning the carb, when cleaning did not work I replaced the entire carb with an oem replacement, and when that didn't work I changed the spark plug. The washer fires right up on the first pull as long as I have the trigger pressed on the sprayer. It will run full throttle this way for as long as I keep the trigger down. Once I let go it dies. I have checked that the auto choke arm is in the right position and it does seem to be. I really would love to get this thing working but I am completely out of ideas on what to try. Any help would be appreciated!

Barings in a variable speed pully

I just got a white outdoor lt 1500.I dropped the deck to check the blades. When I put the deck back on and tried to drive it it died and I lost all tension in drive peddle. The smaller belt was sucked up under the larger belt on the variable speed pulley. when I got it out I noticed the pulley has a lot of play in it. I pulled the pulley and there is no ball barings in it is this normal? Part number 956-0048

Transmission help on HRX217

Hi,

As a new member I'd love to post a pic of my lawnmower but it's currently on it's side in repair :frown:

So my transmission started inconsistently turning the wheels. If I lift the mower they seem to turn freely and at a consistent speed. However when on grass the mower will move some on its own and then stop and require manual pushing.

I thought the belt would be the obvious part requiring replacement. I ordered one and will put it on tomorrow. But from getting a close look at it I'm not so sure it's the culprit.

Would my symptoms indicate a transmission issue? Anything I can do to check it?

My model and serial number:

Robert, I'm real close to the Alpharetta HQ if you want me to swing by for fix ;)

HR214 SX Rebuild

My HR214 has been a little smoky for the past couple seasons but this summer it's getting progressively worse and now smokes all the time and not just on start up. I checked the plug, it has a lot of carbon build up on it and would probably benefit from replacement. Next I checked the compression and it topped out at 90. This mower starts on first pull just as it's done for 35 years. I replaced the oil with a 30 weight hoping to buy me a couple of months before rebuilding this engine right in the middle of summer, but unfortunately, it made no difference. It's truly time to change out the rings.
What parts would I need outside of the set of rings, a head gasket and valve cover gasket?
Any tutorials available? I do have the shop manual for the mower.
Thank you!
Gail

Thinking about buying

Thinking about purchasing a Bob Cat. Haven't seen many nor heard about them around here so of course I wonder about the quality. The dealers where they are being sold at seem nice and well advised about them. One problem I have with them is that they are kept outside in the elements. Does this matter? The XRZ 48 is the model of choice unless any of y'all advise differently. I have never owned a zero turn and have my lawn done professionally now but would like to start doing it myself and saving that money in the long run. Thanks!

Troy Bilt Super Bronco with Kohler engine

I have a Troy Bilt Super Bronco, Model 13WQ93KP011 with the Kohler KT735, 50" deck. Way too many problems. New gas and filter. New air filter. New oil. New plugs. It would only start and run on chokc. Then I moved the throttle lever up and down 6-7 times. It would then run normal. Turned it off and now it will not start unless I pour a little fuel down the carb. This thing has been a pain in the neck. And what is that wire going to the bottom of the carb for?

Mower deck Need a mower deck for my 2012 X300

Hello,
I recently was given a 2012 John Deere X300 in like-new condition. The only issue is that it was purchased new without a mower deck. I see several used 42" decks for sale online but I'm unsure if they will work on my machine. Looks like the X300 was in production for about ten years, are all decks compatible? After purchasing will I need to buy anything additional from the dealer to make it work?
Thanks

Price Check Used 14SBs

Two part question guess.
I received this mower (can't quite seem to find anything about one with a S after the SB, but it clearly has a lower case one right after it) from family.

1) I did not like the feel of using a self propelled lawn mower, and it seemed overly complicated for my needs, so I stored it in the shed out back for a couple of years (admittedly without removing the gas).
I think it was stored in a family garage for something like 15 years prior to that, but someone got it in running condition before I received it.
Not surprisingly, it is not starting. What are the likely issues this may have created, how do I efficiently check for them, and what do I do for them?
What comes to mind is gummed up fuel lines, spark plug, filters, etc.

2) I got it out of the shed in part because my girlfriend's brother has a friend looking for a decent mower. Assuming I get it running reliably, what would be a fair price for it?
I do not get the sense that he is looking at it is a collector/restorer would.
If I do not get it running reliably (and so do not sell to the friend) what would be a good venue for selling it in a non-working condition, and what would be a fair price for that?
... or is this mower unique enough to hold off on selling it to someone either way.

Thanks
-Tom

Variator Drive Question

Could a missing variator idler spring cause the drive to take a few moments to kick in when the "transmission" is engaged. I'm troubleshooting mine and noticed that I don't have such a spring. It's shown at the bottom of the following diagram.

Here's what my variator and belts look like. The center hub on the variator moves up and down freely.

..And what's the part number for the rear drive belt. All I could find was the number for the primary drive belt. Thanks

GBI22 weed eater blower

This isn't about a lawn mower but it's a small engine. I recently broke my starter rope, I rewound the spring and replaced the rope no proplem. The problem is when I put the spring housing back on with all the screws installed and pull the rope it doesn't rewind. Now if I just hold it in place without the screws it rewinds fine. Any ideas, I'm stumped.

Thanks

30" Toro Timemaster walk behind

Just an FYI..........I have a Timemaster that I bought in 2011. Love it, but have had to make a couple of repairs after about 5 years. New Bearings for the blade drive and a new transmission. I wash the mower after each use. Turns-out that this may have caused more harm than good. I had always been proud of myself for taking such good care of it. However, apparently they just aren't built to handle the moisture. Bearings seized and everything that wasn't painted rusted. :confused2:The repairs are fairly easy and well worth it. I'm not much of a mechanic, but it took me only about an hour and a half to put a new transmission in. It is like a new machine now. There are only a couple of choices in the large walk behind class and this machine is by far the best.

ZTH 6127 info needed, engine, etc.

Well hello again folks, been a bit for me here. I wanted to ask a few questions from you professionals who run Husqvarna equipment.

A family member recently ordered a new mower (Ferris) after having some engine troubles with his Husqvarna 6127. He claims it turns over, which i verified, but it won't fire up. He also claimed it was knocking a little prior to it not starting, and it's about 1o years old, so he opted for a new shiny suspension this and that unit and is giving me his old 6127. Said he replaced 1 pump a year back or so, but the other one was running strong. Hour meter reads 241, which seem low to me.

Problem is, I don't have a clue what I am looking at. He mentioned it was a 62" cut, and the deck and belts don't look bad at all. It also appears to have some form of Kohler engine, but I am not sure what horse. I suspect 27 but could be 25?

I really just hated to let the mower go to waste, especially for what it is. It would make a great farm ZT for me to clear the drive and areas around our barns. I also however, don't want to get into it about 2k deep trying to fix it.

I have included some pictures I took yesterday to verify the model, and maybe the engine type.

I would be interested in any re-power options available, other than the Kohler, which i sourced to small engine warehouse at a cost of about 1500 (should be direct plug and play replacement). I'd like to know what options are out there for me, the do-it-yourselfer to install himself. I know my way around mowers, i have taken a few engines down in the past and replaced various working parts.

I am also fine with switching to the B&S Commercial turf series @ 25 or 27 hp, being that is what's currently on my Scag and running strong. The only issue I see here is figuring out the wiring harness conversions myself. If someone sells that type of adapter I'd be interested in knowing.

Thanks in advance for any and all info you can give me.

Homer.

Odd chainsaw issue at full throttle.

So I have a PP4218A 18" poulan pro chainsaw, and I took it apart to clean it. I just removed the bar, the brake, the brake spring, and cleaned it up, put it back together. It's only been used a few times, but now all of a sudden if I squeeze the trigger more than about 3/4 it stalls, however the cause of stall is the kill switch engages. Give it full throttle and you can watch the kill switch move to "off" position and I can't for the life of me figure out why. Anyone have a clue what may be causing this? It's a huge bummer to cut trees at 3/4 throttle and kill it every 2 minutes lol.

Do some hydrostatic transmissions come without a fan?

I picked up an old Craftsman 42 inch cut rider for FREE a couple years back. This is one of the old dark green ones from 1998 or so. It had been sitting in an overgrown yard when it was given to me. This is the type of deal where you have to come in with a chainsaw and a push mower just to get the thing out of its position. It had been sitting there for 3 years like this and surprisingly I had it running in about half an hour.

This became my rough cut brush cutting mower. It gets the hard use cutting brush and I just push right through it and run down small saplings which are then mowed over. I admit that I put this old thing through way more than it was ever meant to do but it keeps coming back for more.

Then a month or so ago it began to slow down dramatically if it was run more than a few minutes. I checked the transaxle fluid and it was full but black as coal. I also noticed that it didn't have a fan and looked like it never was intended to have one. It isn't like the fan was broken off. It looks to have never had one unless I am missing something....

I figured I would at least try changing the oil before considering it DOA. This is a Hydrogear unit and they suggested 15W50 or 20W50 oil so I went with Mobil 1 15W50 synthetic and changed it out. The old oil was black and had that broken down burned smell as well as that fine sheen that indicates metallic wear particles.

Anyway, I refilled and bled the unit with the 15W50 and the unit came back to life and can practically pop wheelies no matter how long the mower has been running. I have felt the transmission after hours of operation and you could probably cook an egg on it no problem. It is way too hot to touch for more than the time it takes to realize it is way too hot.

Any suggestion about the fan? I run this quite hard for hours on end at times and even though it is a rough old mower, it serves a good use as a brush cutter for me. I plan to change the fluid again at the end of this season as the oil I drained out the first time was quite nasty and figure another change cannot hurt.

Repairs what should the fuel pump vacuum be for a kawaski v-twin on a johndeere 345

I have a johndeere 345 with a Kawasaki v-twin with a mechanical fuel pump. This mower acts like at times it's running out of fuel. I found the fuel line between the pump and fuel filter mostly collapsed and replaced it, not it, then noticed the fuel filter was not full and it looked like the fuel was siphoning into and though the filter. This is what brings me to the question how many inces of vacuum should the fuel pump pull, at present this one pulls about 13 is this enough ?

Looking for used HRC2163HXA transmission

Hello. I'm searching for a used transmission for my HRC2163HXA. Brand new they are over $400 and I really don't want to put that into my machine. It's about 7 years old and a ton of lawns cut. The part number is 20001-VK6-305. I've looked on ebay but no luck with tranny for this model.

8 HP Troy Bilt Tiller: Runs, Stops suddenly, Then starts right back up

Model: 195437 Type: 015001 Code: 82030112

Over 35 years old, Dad used it a lot for 20 years, then I used it a little for 10 years, no one used it for last 5 because of hard starting (when it would start, needed to keep choke on at least half way). Decided to replace original carb with one from China. New air filter, fuel line and filter. Fuel tank drained and cleaned. Now it starts well, but after about 1 minute of run time, suddenly stops like someone has turned the key off (has electric start, but do not use, I do have an old battery connected), but one pull of the starter cord and it starts right up again. The fuel cap breather is not plugged.

Engine has never been disassembled. If I put my finger over sparkplug hole, I can feel compression and the spark seems good.

Read online that maybe the problem is the float not working properly? Theory is the engine suddenly starves, but by the time I walk around to pull-start it, there is enough fuel flowing into carb to run another minute?

The pics show the key switch, electric start wires and the throttle cable with the wires removed and now in a wire nut. I can turn off the tiller by using the key.

Looking for suggestions.

Hydraulic Pump one Wheel Motor?

I have a '07 John Deere Z445 Zero Turn with a 54" deck. On level ground, it goes fine. Trying to go up a small grade in the yard, the left side won't go at all. I'm fairly mechanical so I'd like to do this myself...just don't want to throw money at the wrong issue. Thanks,

Briggs and Stratton 18.5 Twin Cylinder Won't Start

So like a dumbass I was jump starting this new to me lawnmower I purchased for $250 with a dead battery, well in my rush I crossed wires and killed something. I've replaced the ignition switch, and the started solenoid with no luck. Funny thing is I found a button inside the engine bay that if I hold it down I can turn over the engine but even when doing this the engine will not stay running it will just briefly fire up.

Here's some engine specs

Model: 42a707
Type: 1237 01
Code: 95012558

Here are photos of the switch I found that if I hold I can turn the key and it will start the engine but won't stay running, I also want to add before I didn't have to hold the switch to start it, it started just fine before crossing cables.

I also want to add I replaced the starter solenoid with a 4 pole solenoid, here is a picture of how I have it wired in case it is incorrect.

Mower won't cold start because choke butterfly won't move and close when I move the throttle lever down to the choke label. Fan Shroud/Engine Cover

Hello everyone, I have a 2014 Craftsman 7400 Pro Series with the 26HP Kohler motor with a 54" deck. I'm having problems with the service tech from Sears where I bought the mower and extended warranty from and it's good until 2019. The fan shroud cracked at the bolt holes and broke off the engine. The service tech says it's "just for ascetics and doesn't help cool the engine". It's been a couple weeks since he's been out to replace the broken EZ Change system on the mower deck and now after 20 minutes of operating the mower, you can visually see lots of heat radiating off the engine and a hot smell. My question, is the fan shroud (looks like a funnel over the fan) required on the mower, or am I wrong? I've looked the part up on sears, it's about $25. But it says it takes on average 2 hours to replace. The service calls are covered under warranty so it won't cost me anything to call the service tech back out. Thanks

Craftsman 247.375910 self propelled my stride mower: hose clamp placement

I recently replaced the carburetor on my 2014 Craftsman 247.375910 self propelled my stride mower. I had also removed the tank. In doing so, I removed the fuel line and carbon canister hose. Each had black plastic hose/cable clamps securing them to the aircleaner side of the engine. For the life of me, I can't recall where the clamps were affixed/secured (around the fuel line/carbon canister hose - to the mower. The parts diagrams do not show the hose/cable clamps and I can't find any photos that depict the location. To be clear, this is not the 9571100 flexible fuel line clamp, not the 726-04101 breather hose clamp, Nor is this the plastic support clamp 723-04071. Would like to put them back where they belong. Can anyone identify they location? A photo would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Blade height chages???

Sorry guys but got another problem. Put new blades on and today before I use it I checked the height and the blades are all over the place. Back into the garage and get every thing back to 4 and took it for a little spin came back in and one side is exact and the other side off. I've adjusted them to four at least 12 times and after every little spin the yard I come back with one side and the other (side with chute ) the rear of the blade is four but the front side is loose as heck. Something is off. Again like said in another post my dealer didn't do his setup the blades were all over 1" off. Any thoughts or ideas before I have to take it back? Thanks

By way of introduction

New member - Titus213. I found this forum while searching for some help with my fairly new DR Walk Behind Field and Brush mower. It's powered by a Briggs 20 HP and I've had a few issues with it. It's in the shop now for, hopefully, warranty repairs. It started blowing some black smoke thru the exhaust. I added some SeaFoam to the gas (another suggestion from this forum) and it cleared up for a bit but shortly started doing the same thing. It deteriorated rapidly to the point where it would not start. I checked the valves as suggested here and adjusted them which got it started but not running great. It is now alternating between white smoke and black smoke. Having exhausted my mechanical abilities I opted for professional help. Unfortunately summer arrived this week in Washington and the shops are all backed up at least two weeks, some more than two months.

What the DR is used for - Two years ago this month we moved into our newly built retirement home on 34 acres of timber managed land in Washington state. While fir is the primary crop blackberries are running a close second, along with the normal assortment of briers and thorn bearing plant life, some of it over 13 feet high and nearly all of it capable of leaving you shredded and bleeding out behind the mower. The property is very rough (we have yet to get to the bottom acres because of the overgrowth) and much too steep for a normal small tractor with a brush hog attached. The DR seemed a perfect fit for what we are trying to accomplish.

Need help with Deck Engagement Cable

I have a craftsman riding mower, model number 247.288851, and am having trouble changing the Deck Engagement Cable, part number 946-04173C.

I have the cable connected to the deck, but am having trouble at the lever end. The pics in the owners manual, and everyplace else I've seen, says the cable should snap into a clip, then into the hole on the lever. I removed the battery and the battery supports to get a good look. I see the hole in the lever, but don't see any clip anywhere.

Does anyone have better pics of where this clip is?

I am happy to answer any questions, or post pics if needed.

Thanks for all help.

L-120 Running on 1 Cylinder

We just bought a JD L-120 used 6 weeks ago. It ran great, the guy did the oil change and sharpened the blades and did all the service work up to date. We mowed our yard a total of 6 times (all grass less then an acre) and it has 464 hrs on it. We just mowed and getting it put away and all of a sudden sounded loud and has no power in reverse. Checked the spark plugs and looks to be running on only one cylinder. HELP! My husband is mechanically inclined but never worked on a mower so looking for advice. We went by a JD dealer to get a manual and of course doesn't have one.

Sabre 1438GS - stalls when trans or blade is engaged

Hey all,

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me out before I throw up my hands with this mower. I bought a 2000 Sabre/JD 1438GS 38" last week. I have two acres and have been using a walk behind so believe me when I say I want this thing going! Engine issues were a known when I bought it but everything else was supposed to be good as of early last season. Good news: I've got the engine running. Bad news: Nothing else is working.

Bear with me... I've always worked on my own cars/motorcycles but lawnmowers are a bit of a new world.

Engine:
It's a Briggs and Stratton 14.5 hp Intek OHV (287707). I'm going straight to the starter / frame to jump it to avoid anything in between. I adjusted the valves; the starter was bad so I replaced; sparkplug; etc. The solenoid is clicking rapidly when trying to start from the ignition so I'll likely replace, but for now the short story is that with fresh gas, a shot of starter fluid, and jumping the starter, the engine now fires up and runs like a top. Problem solved! I went to take a victory lap around the yard and here's where i'm now chasing my tail.

Transmission/Brake issue(?):
With the engine running and 'in gear' when I release the brake (whether slowly or quickly) it stalls out almost immediately. I can rescue it if I depress the brake right away. The reason 'in gear' is in quotes is because no matter what gear is selected and whether or not the brake is on still rolls freely, or spins freely if lifted as if it's in neutral. I can confirm that the linkage appears to be engaging the trans appropriately when shifted. Looking underneath while releasing the brake, the engine IS engaging the belt which seems to be causing the stall. No clue what these things could be symptoms of besides a shot trans, but that's the reason I'm asking you fine folks  I would love to be wrong on this but to my knowledge there is no transmission release. I've looked everywhere.

Deck issue(?):
Attempting to either eliminate an issue or discover a new one, I tried to engage the deck while the engine was running and the brake was depressed. since they're on different spindles/pulleys I figured it should engage regardless of the trans. Same issue... It stalls, but If I disengage right away I can rescue the engine from stalling.

I was trying all of this testing while seated on the mower with all four tires on the ground. Currently, I have it jacked up with one of the rear wheels off for access. I also have a jumper attached to the seat safety switch to eliminate a variable while I test this thing out.

If you all have any thoughts I'm all ears! I can take pictures of anything, if needed, as well.

Thanks!

Ed
