Repairs z225 John Deere Tensioner Spring for Transmission Drive Belt

Hi. First time here, hope I do this correctly. We have a 2011 z225 John Deere mower. It has about 521 hours on it. Two weeks ago, the tensioner spring broke. I went to our local John Deere. They ordered part #M170332 and it was the incorrect spring. Then they ordered part #M72291 and it appeared to be the correct part. We put the spring on and I cut for about 1 hour and the spring broke again. Could they have ordered the wrong part again? Could it have been a defected part? Do I have other issues, causing the spring to break? Any assistance appreciated.

Stihl leaf blower BG 55-Z, compression 75

I have a Stihl leaf blower, model BG 55- Z. It was running fine, ran out of gas, refilled it, would not start. Replaced plug (even though plug looked good). Tested spark, good. Tried a small squirt of starter fluid, nothing. Rebuilt carb, noticed nothing damaged, and replaced fuel filter. Still no start. Removed muffler, soaked in desolvant over night even though it looked OK. Looked at piston through exhaust port, piston and rings look very good. Reinstall muffler, still no start.
Compression test 75. I understand it should be between 90 and 110.

Would a low compression test of 75 cause the engine to not fire at all?
Is it likely that the engine would go from running well one minute to not starting at all the next as a result of some compression issue?

New carb and Engine is surging/Odd throttle control

I have a craftsman lt-1000 with a briggs 31C707-0230-E1. Air filter filled with gas, so I took the plug out, fuel line off the carb, left the oil valve open for a few days. Installed a cheap new carb yesterday along with new filters and fuel line then put everything back together. At first the engine would surge while idling but it's smoothed out a little. It still surges, and throttle up stalls out with some black smoke. There is no noticeable difference between throttle in the center and all the way down (Throttle down worked properly before this). Max throttle stalls the engine and kicks out black smoke.

Wiring Connection

Have a Craftsman YT3000. Started good, then died, opened up and realized there was a mice nest behind the gas tanks under the steering housing. Removed the Gas tank to clean and there is a black and blues wires into a black connector hanging loose. Where does this plug into? I searched many videos and articles on the wiring of this mower but could not find anything that explained this. The battery is good but it will not start or turn. No headlights - that wiring is still connected. Fuses appear to be OK.

Mower deck 1960 - 1965 cub cadet 124 w/k301a engine and 48" international mower deck

I previously asked about a spindle for this mower deck and I checked the reply for Cub Cadet. However, this site requires a Cub Cadet part number and I only have the multiple IH part numbers and cannot find a cross over numbers to the Cub Cadet numbers. This mower deck has three spindles and blades. Two spindles with a small pulley on top (one on each side) and a double spindle in the middle. The deck is driven by a front belt connection instead of connecting to the back due to the motor is up front like a tractor. Somehow the insides of the spindle was pulled out and only the pulley, 3-hole triangle connector and the round cylinder are there. I am trying to restore the deck as the tractor section is really great and runs like a top. If anyone knows the part number for a complete spindle, please let me know. If someone knows a deck for parts, I would be interested in this as well. Thanks

Husqvarna wont move.....much

I have a 2013 husqvarna yth24k48. It's never given me any problems until this mowing season. Last week I mowed and out of nowhere the mower just stopped moving. I let it set for a few came back out and it ran fine. Well I jumped on it today and made a couple passes and same thing only this time I can't get it to do anything. I've looked it over and pulled the deck off to get a better view at everything. The only thing I've found is that the two green wires for the electric clutch were wrapped around the main pulley from the motor and had been cut. I spliced them back together but the mower still won't do anything. When I hit the gas, it will barely roll for about 10 ft and stops. Any ideas??

Aftermarket Engines

I bought a used Troy Bilt LTX 1842. Model 13ap609g063. The previous owner replaced it with the 14hp Briggs, instead of the 18hp 2 years ago. So it was still a decent buy at $200. It's a little underpowered on inclines. If I decide to drop another motor in at the end of the season, what are my oprions? I have a engine in my broken down MTD mower that's good, it's an 18.5hp(?) V Twin Briggs. Any good aftermarket replacement engines at decent prices out there?

Husqvarna tractor brake pedal switch location

I have a rider mover YTH18K46 (although the issue would apply to many similar models).

A vine caught on the brake pedal and pulled it back (towards me). After that happened, I was not able to keep the engine idling with the parking brake and, after shutting down the tractor, I am not able to restart it. There's no power going to the starter.

I suspect the clutch/brake switched got damaged or disconnected. I can locate the switch on the electric schematic but not on the more descriptive illustrations. So my question is, where is this switch physically located and what's the best way to access it?

Thanks in advance

Brand new Briggs 24HP Intek engine surges / lopes without PTO engaged

Brand new mower with Briggs 24 HP INTEX engine.

I am having an issue using the mower being able to idle properly. It idles like crap. It revs up and then stalls, revs up and stalls. Engine is brand new, less than 1 hour use.

When just using the tractor at normal throttle, lets say to drive down the lawn before starting to cut, the engine RPM revs up and then engine cuts off momentarily (as if being governed or artificially stalled) to slow the engine speed, then revs up again...then slows again... It keeps doing this even after running for a while. The best way I can describe this is as if it is getting proper fuel and then fuel is cut off..then fuel is turned on ...then fuel is cut off. What this amounts to is a bad sounding idle, and a mower that is unusable because it surges and slows (causing it to jerk ) versus runs smoothly. It exhibits this same behavior regardless of throttle position but does not do this when it is under a load (when PTO engaged, for example). I can get it to stop doing this when on FULL CHOKE but then of course the engine runs too rich after 15 seconds or so. So, under light or no load, runs like crap. Under load, as when engaging the PTO/blades on the deck, and everything is spinning, the engine RPM runs up and holds where it needs to hold and the motor runs just fine and does not have same RPM up and down surge/stall issue.

I'm guess a slow-idle issue with the slow jet or perhaps an adjustment somewhere. Where do I begin? Is there a shop manual online for this engine and carburetor?

The mower has less than 1 hour on it. it is brand new. Husquvarna with Briggs and Stratton motor.

Mountfield HP185: surging/thrumming idle

Hi,

I recently acquired a Mountfield HP185 which starts but runs with a surging/thrumming idle and I'm trying to get to the bottom of the cause.

I've removed and cleaned the spark plug; it was a bit sooty but not too bad, drained out the old gas and put some fresh in and run it for 2-3 minutes. I've removed and washed and dried the air filter. I've adjusted the metal plinth for the idle speed and this seems to have helped slightly but it's not running smoothly. I've removed and cleaned the plastic carburettor too.

What steps would you suggest trying next? Should I run the mower for longer to get the fresh fuel all the way through the line and carb?

Should I replace the spark plug anyway? Also I guess an oil change can't do any harm right?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Buying Advice 25cc or 35 CC Honda Trimmer (Versattach)???

I love Honda stuff, so Only considering a Honda trimmer.....has to match with my Honda lawnmower, lol So I have dwindled the choice down to either the 25cc or 355cc VersAttach model. Main use will be to trim the grass and Edge it....so will be buying those 2 attachments right away. Not a huge yard...I think the whole lot is around 9000 sq ft..will take 10-15 to trim it.....and then edge it. Down the road may buy the pruner.......I guess my major question is...will the smaller 25cc be enough power to do all that? I just want to buy something that is going to last..and not kick myself down the road that I should have spent the extra $50 and got the 35cc...but I do not want to waste $$$ either. TY

Unusual problem with John Deere 115

My problem is strange and I've not been able to find anything on the internet. The mower is older but still runs well until late last year. If I'm cutting/driving on level ground, on a slope where the left side of the mower is lower or turning hard right, the mower still runs/cuts fine.

The problem is that if I am turning hard left (as in cutting around trees/shrubs) or on a slope where the right side is lower than the left, it starts to sputter and eventually chokes down unless I disengage the mower and slow the engine to an idle. Since the 2 yards I cut (mine and my parent's house) have a decent slope on them, this means that cutting on the slope with the right side lower happens a good portion of the time and it has added about 50% extra to my cutting time.

I have drained the carburetor, fuel line and fuel tank so I know it's not an issue with something in the fuel system. The nearest authorized Deere dealer and repair shops are close to an hour drive from me and I have no way to take it to them to look at so I'm kind of stuck. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Tire Pressure and Ride Comfort

If this issue has come up here before, I've missed it, and I apologize for being redundant. While researching ZTR's, I encountered several instances of complaints about the ride quality of brand new mowers, and subsequent responses asking whether the complainant had checked the tire pressure before operating. So when my mower arrived, I check the tire pressure. First though, I looked at the manual; it listed the front casters and drive tires at 25 PSI and 12 PSI, respectively. The drive tire PSI was also listed on stickers on each rear rim. I was a little surprised then when the actual pressures were 30/front, and 28/drive. I was going to compare the differences of the ride at those pressures to the ride at the recommended pressures until I saw that the max PSI listed on the drive tires' sidewalls read 20 PSI, or 8 PSI less than what was actually in the tires. Instead, I adjusted the pressures and got to mowing. So unfortunately, I can't give an account of the difference in ride quality, although with the information I had, I think my opinion might have been a little biased anyway.

I've read that one reason mowers arrive with elevated tire pressures all around is because it lessens the chances of damaging rims and such while the mower is tightly strapped down during transport. I can buy that, I suppose, and after all, this isn't so much a post about complaining as it is about getting information out. That said, if any of you are experiencing a ride on your new mower that's a little more bumpy than you expected, maybe your lawn's not to blame so much as the rubber bricks your axle might be strapped to. Food for though.

HRX217HYA clutch lever sticking -- new mower

Been having mixed feelings about this mower. Yes, it's awesome, very powerful, mulches better than any mower I've ever used, etc etc -- when working. First weekend it spewed out gas from the air filter when I tried to start it the second time ever (let it sit, eventually started. Must have flooded it somehow and figured it was a fluke).

Now second weekend, the clutch lever is sticking. When I release it, the lever sticks in the engaged position and sometimes takes 3-6 seconds to slowly releases itself, sometimes not even at all. Really caught me off-guard the first time it happened and required me to pull the lever to release it for the rest of the yard. I have searched online and can't find other related posts, nor is there any mention of this being adjustable in the owners manual. I don't see any opportunity for adjustment on the mower itself, either. Looking at a Honda video on youtube, the clutch lever clearly springs back down in the disengaged position immediately after it's released.

Purchased the unit from Home Depot. I'd rather not have to mess with taking it back to exchange for another, but that may be my next step if there isn't another fix y'all can suggest.

Long term small engine storage

I don't know if I've asked this on this particular forum or not but if you had a generator or something and you wanted to store it indefinitely (until needed), what's the best method to make sure it's going to fire up when you need it?

I have two generators. Both have "Chonda" engines. Both have bolts on the side/bottom of the fuel bowel to drain the carburetors. I'm assuming this is to for long term storage.

Should I drain the fuel tanks and the fuel bowels? Is that better than leaving the tank and carburetors full of gasoline? I know eventually the carburetor is going to clog up and the gas is going to go bad from evaporation.

With the smaller generator, I drained the fuel tank and sprayed some fogging oil into the tank. And drained the fuel bowel. Is this a good idea? Should I place a piece of plastic wrap between the fuel tank and fuel cap to prevent moisture from entering the tank and rusting it? Or is the fogging oil good enough?

I've never had an engine actually "lock up" from sitting, even engines that have sat for 15 years as long as they are kept out of the weather. Just issues with carburetors on gravity feed fuel systems.

The other option is to convert the larger generator to propane so I can run it off my 500 gallon propane tank but the longest we have ever been without power is between 24 to 48 hours so I don't know if it's worth the trouble to go that route.

Is pure gasoline worth the extra money?

I've been using non ethanol (even after there was a choice) in my mowers and my Trabant 601 which has a 2 cycle engine because of issues I've read about ethanol in gravity feed fuel systems.

I wonder if I'm throwing my money away paying 10 to 15 cents more per gallon for this stuff. Is pure gasoline really any better than E10? Or should I say is E10 really that bad?

I've always heard it will eat natural rubber. So lawnmower engines built after 200? uses neoprene fuel hoses, o-rings, etc which alcohol won't attack. And I've heard it will corrode aluminum which newer carburetors are made of anyway.

The other day I got out my MTD which is my backup riding mower. But I occasionally use it a couple of times during the season just to make sure it's going to run when I need it. Well my Husqvarna's mower deck has a busted spindle so I needed to mow my yard.

I had not used it since last fall and topped the tank off with pure gasoline before putting it up for the season. I noticed about a quart of gasoline had evaporated between October and April. That seems quite a bit. Where did the gasoline go? I wondered if the float valve was not seating and the crankcase was full of gas. At this moment the level on the dipstick showed normal.

At first the engine ran fine but after an hour or so it started running rough then after I shut it off for about 10 minutes to chit chat with my father, I tried to restart it, the engine was hydro locked. Gasoline was pouring out everywhere. I hooked it to my father's truck and we pulled it up the hill to my garage. I took the carburetor off and cleaned the float valve and passages with carb cleaner. The spark plug was fouled from where it had been running rough and the crankcase was full of gas. So I had to bead blast the spark plug and change the oil (which it needed both anyway) but this put me an hour behind my mowing.

I really didn't find any crude in the float valve. However this carburetor has a non adjustable (no brass tabs to bend) white plastic float and the float initially would not pivot on it's own.

I'm not real sure what the deal was but after putting the carb back together and testing it to make sure the float valve was working the mower ran fine the rest of the day.

Spring of 2016: Somehow water got into the fuel tank in my Husqvarna (Craftsman) over the winter. My guess is I forgot to top the tank off and moisture in the void condensed and sunk to the bottom. I had always heard E10 will absorb water and sink to the bottom. Well water will do the same in pure gasoline.

I blinded over two fuel filters until I figured out what was happening. I filtered all of this gas through one of those Mr. Funnels and was able to filter out the water. The mower ran fine on this same batch of gasoline.

The reason I've been buying pure gasoline to begin with is to avoid both of these problems that seem to occur primarily with gravity feed fuel systems. But it seems my efforts were all for naught.

I've been using E10 in my 68 Ford Fairlane, 1980 Fiat Spider, 1987 Yugo, 2003 Subaru and my 1998 Chevrolet van for ages with no problems. I have had no issues with E10 eating rubber parts on any of these vehicles. Some of hoses on my older vehicles is Gates LOL which is made of neoprene. I have no idea if the Subaru and my Chevy van are setup for E10 since they were built before E10 became somewhat the standard 10 years ago.

I have tested E10 versus pure gasoline on my Subaru and Chevy van. No difference in gas mileage whatsoever.

So is pure gasoline worth the extra money? Is E10 really that bad?

From my experience, I've had the same issues with pure gasoline I've been trying to avoid from using E10, no difference in gas mileage, no damage to rubber parts from using E10.

What's your experience?

17hp 1 cylinder B&S on 1998 Scotts mower runs about five seconds and dies

I bought this little used, but sadly neglected, mower at a garage sale last week. At least they'd kept it inside. It looks new. I figured I could make it run, but so far I'm not having much luck. It had no old fuel, so the tank was clean. I began by removing the Welbro carb and cleaning all its orifices with carburetor cleaner and a strand of wire. (Twice now) The needle and seat are functioning properly. The anti-diesel solenoid was sticky, but freed up nicely with the carb cleaner. It actuates when the key is turned on now, or pushes in by hand. It didn't before. There is good gravity fuel flow to the carb. The choke is fully closed with the throttle on full-fast. The choke did need to be adjusted. The governor spring is hooked up right. I think it still has a fuel starvation issue. It will run for a few seconds. If I let it sit for a minute or so with the key on, it will fire up again, and run for a few more seconds.

Any ideas?

Dura Force?? The "force" ain't with me!

I recently got a 2003 10247 Dura Force from a friend. It did not seem to have been used too much for a mower 14 years old and now I think I see why! I cleaned it up, cleaned out the carburetor and put the blade on right (it was upside down). It was hard to start, but with a little ether it ran like a house a fire. I put an inline fuel shutoff on it to keep the gas from leaking out when it was shut off. This is the first LB I ever saw that did not come equipped a fuel shutoff. It was still hard to start, so I disassembled the carb again to make sure the jets were fully cleaned out. After that, it would start up, but did not run right and flooded instantly. It would stall if the throttle was fully advanced. It seemed to be drowning in fuel. It even filled up that little U shaped gizmo (part # 981557) under the deck/muffler. The float tested good, so I put a in new needle and seat and it still floods out! This one has me perplexed and I have had enough Dura Force to do me for this life! Anybody got any thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks,
Parkboy

Briggs 9P702 hot starting issues - Husqvarna 5521P

New to the forum. I like to rebuild and fix lawn mowers for fun. I have kept my 1973 Lawn Boy running for years.

I recently acquired a Husqvarna 5521P mower for free because it didn't run. It needed some obvious stuff, which I did:
new muffler (and auto-choke mechanism) - old one was frozen up
cleaned the carb out really well
new spark plug
new control cable

The mower has a Briggs 9P702-0010-F1 motor on it, which is the 550EX, I believe. Starting from cold, this thing fires right up and runs strong. If you shut it down long enough to empty the bag or drink half a beer, it won't start back up. If you let it hang out for maybe 15 or 20 minutes, it'll start again.

I'm confident the choke mechanism is working properly, since it's new. I read somewhere to check the valve lash, which I did. It was not adjusted properly, so I adjusted it to the factory spec. I'm currently sitting here waiting for the RTV to cure up on the valve cover before I give it another whirl.

What else could cause issues with hot starting?

New member, looking at a new 725DT.

Hi guys, I'm about to pull the trigger in my first zero turn. It's a major investment but IMO, there is only one brand to consider. I have a few questions about my potential new machine to ease my mind.

Is it ok to talk price on this site?

Thoughts on the rear discharge 61" deck?

I've always heard good things about the G2 trans, is the T6 better? As good at least? I get how it works and all, just curious about reliability. I originally wanted to find a 722 or 9XX for that reason, but hard to find a clean one I'd consider buying. I have found some clean older 721D's, but not sure how I feel about those machines. They would save me some coin, but idk.

Does older attachments hook up to the new machines?

Anything else I should be looking at? Or anything else I need to mention?

Machine I'm looking at, 2017 725dt, 61 rear discharge powerfold, high end suspension seat, folding rops, bar tires.

Currently mow relatively flat 3.5 acres but have a purchase contract on another 11.6 that I will own soon. Current mowing machine is a mahindra 2615HST with a 72" woods MMM.

Craftsman Mower oil/conrod&crankshaft issue

so i just recently pulled my mower out of storage for the season, changed the oil and put gas in it and discovered the primer bulb didn't work so i used starting fluid and it started right up no problems runs as it should cut front and back grass. next week pulled the intake and primer bulb piece off and the gasket was shot, used gasket maker and waited till the next day and priming works so i started it up to cut and ran great but about halfway through i noticed a slight ticking but didn't think much of it b/c i was almost finished. after i finished i emptied the bag and went out to the front yard and when i went to pull the engine over something was really wrong, pulling the engine over it was like the conrod had shattered but the engine was still turning over and each revolution it got worse so i called it and tore the entire engine down to the crank case and the conrod screws were totally loose and figured this might be an easy fix so i gutted the engine tightened the conrod screws to 95 footpounds and the engine was totally locked up, tired putting out on it but still seized so i took the piston and conrod out and they are pretty badly scored after reassembling making sure the conrod isnt angled and everything is lubricated but when tightened the conrod seizes against the crankshaft. loose and everything spins fine. What went wrong here. was there not enough oil and got too hot? if so wouldn't scoring the conrod and crankshaft make it looser instaed of swollen and tighter? Are all i need is a conrod and maybe crankshaft? the piston looked fine just alot of carbon buildup.

Hustler Raptor - Shearing Spline Shaft and Pulley

So, this is the 3rd time I have to fix a complete sheared spline shaft and pulley off. This is the blade by the discharge side.
Here's what my problem looks like
Capturem2.jpg

Any ideas why this would be happening? The parts involved here are: the assembly, a spacer, pulley and nut as such:
Capturem3.jpg

I have noticed that the nut is really hard to turn as it reaches the pulley due to the locking mechanism on the nut (the internal threads on the nut seem to be pressed)

The first time, I noticed there was a bit of axial play along the shaft which was the cause of such failure, so the second time I made sure there was no play, but it happen again.

Any ideas?

John Deere L130 - drive won't engage

So, need a pro's help here. The main drive belt came off the pulley at the rear axle. Dropped the mower, put the belt back on the pulley. Fired the mower up, but now it won't move. There is a little lever behind the rear seat that you can pull backwards to disengage the wheels. Have noticed now that whether his is "in" or "out" the wheels still move freely. Obviously the drive gears aren't engaging now.

Any help narrowing this down?

Thanks.

Hustler Raptor - Won't Go Straight

I have a Hustler Raptor 42" Deck with about 60 hrs. I have been having issues with the zero turn NOT going straight. With the handles pushed all the way forward, I can tell the left wheel goes faster, so the mower veers right.
Even when the handles are at a neutral position, the mower wants to turn right.

I have checked the settings on the Steering Control Lever to make sure both handles align.

I have checked the tire pressure to make sure they are equal in pressure but no luck.

Is there any way to adjust mechanically the speed of one side vs the other?
Is this related to something hydraulic?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kubota GR2110 Differential locking Issue

I brought my Kubota GR2110 out from winter storage and cut the grass for the first time of the season. The tractor has 300 hours on it. When making left turns I noticed the left side rear wheel appeared to be acting like a locked differential as it appeared to be spinning to fast and tearing up the turf on those inside turns. I have not looked under the tractor yet but the dealer said there are cables that are supposed to allow the inside turn tire to slip. Could this be a simple cable adjustment? and if so can anyone give me insight on the correct method of adjusting the cable?

Thank You
JL002

low speed on max throttle

I have an old 3 hp toro 92908, self propelled, auto choke, fwd, b&s eng #1842-02. I have kept it running over the years with routine maintainance only, no major repairs. I keep the gas tank empty in the winter and fuel it in the spring. A year ago I replaced diaphragm with oe B&s, and it has run perfectly since. This spring, it started on the first pull after winter, but has a low, even idle speed at max throttle. The choke plate is closed, but the idle becomes full speed when I manually open the plate to full vertical position while the engine is cold, not hot, on a fresh start. I let it get hot with the choke plate held open, and once hot, I was able to mow at full speed, and stop and start with no problem. I get no surges or roughness. There is no reason to think I have accidentally turned the idle speed or mixtures screws while in storage, and I find it hard to believe the NEW diaphragm has failed. Any suggestions to solve this problem appreciated

Wiring Diagram for a John Deere L130

I'm trying to find a wiring diagram for a John Deere L130 riding mower. The starter won't make any noise at all, not even the starter solenoid. The battery is charged. I checked the parking brake switch with a ohm meter and it seems to be working. I took the starter off and went to the John Deere dealership and they tested it and said it was good. Without a wiring diagram, I can't trace the wiring to find out where the 12 volts to the starter solenoid is missing.

Hey now I have a 8 yrs old yt 4000. never had anything but non ethanal gas put into it. I have taken the carb off and it is clean as a whistle. Mower not running fast enough when PTO engaged

I serviced my Simplicity tractor for the season and used it 3 - 4 times but now the mower will not run at full speed when I try to mow. When I try to mow the engine falters. The tractor without the mower engaged drives fine. I am stumped. Anybody have this happen to them and might know what the problem is?

G6 blades vs. Scag standard equipment

I noticed some mention of G6 blades in a thread about leaves, so I checked out the Oregon web site. They sound great (according to their marketing copy). My mower is new, works great and I'm not ready to change anything, but I'd like to hear reviews on the G6 blades from those who have experience with them. Are they noticeably better than Scag blades?

Also, I'd like to know how often you sharpen your blades. How much trouble is it on a 61" TT deck? Is that tool that holds your blades still worth buying? Do you use an angle grinder to sharpen your blades and do you balance them?

18hp Kawasaki

My JD with a 18 hp Kawasaki had a valve stick and popped the guide out, at least that is what the repair person told me. Is this a common problem with this engine? This is the first Kawasaki engine I have owned and I don't know much about their habits. It has a little over 800 hours on it and I bought it used about a year ago.

Looking to buy...how important is a local dealer?

All, live in texas, and have a 3 acre property to take care of. I'd love to get a Gravely but the closest dealer is ~5 hours away. Local to me, besides the box stores, is Exmark.

Would this deter you from getting a Gravely?

Thanks!

Walker Alternative Drive Controls

I have just bought a 20 year old MDDGHS mower for my 2 acres of garden and after fixing a series of problems on it (mainly caused by neglect) I'm now learning how to use it.
I find it very hard to co-ordinate the speed control with the steering levers (specially in tight areas) and wonder if a modification where the speed, forward/reverse would be controlled by a foot pedal and steering with a steering wheel is feasible?
I will no doubt eventually learn how to use its present set up, but I find it's not intuitive in the least and quite hard work in restricted areas.
I have been using a Greenfield for the last 20 years which has a very simple (if primitive) propulsion system that has worked amazingly well (just requiring occasional belt replacements).
I wonder if anyone has made an alternate control system for the Walker or thought of doing it? I did contact Walker in the US and Stevens in NZ, but they were both unhelpful: suggested to practice and get used to it. I was particularly disappointed in Stevens in NZ as they claim to make improvements and alterations for Walker mowers (like the deck lift modification)...

Need help identifying carb on this edger

Dug out the old McLane edger with the B&S 3 hp engine on it and it seems that if you don't use something for more years then you can remember the carb gums up and needs a bit of love. Engine starts but gas flows out the bottom of the carb (I think that is where it is coming from) so I am looking for help in identifying the carb so I can obtain a rebuild kit or new carb. Specs on engine are as follows: Model 90102 0181 01 Code 95042603. Couple of pic to show you all what it looks like.

Idler Pulley Replacement - Wright Mower

Good Morning: The idler pulley on the hydraulic drive side of my Wright Sport X mower is fried. There is no manuf. data on the pulley which is 6" OD, 1.375" wide, 3/8" shaft size. The dia. of the flat belt surface is about 5.25". The pulley is held off the mounting bar by a sleeve which extends about 1/4" past the outer rim of the pulley. Any idea where I can find a new pulley. My mower is very well made and has held up well but for this particular part, I'm looking for something of maybe better quality then the original. The belt went along with the pulley and working in the confined space is not something I'd want to do on a regular basis. Thanks for the help - Al

Bagger Compatibility

Hi everyone, I'm brand new to the forum and recently bought a 28" Snapper RER. I'm looking for a bagger and would like to avoid paying $300-400 for one. My question is, how compatible are other brands' bagger systems with Snapper. I'm not opposed to a little modification to the bagger. Just wondering if others have managed to make other systems work on a Snapper.

Here's what the back end of mine looks like:

Grasshopper 1212 Traction Kit

Good Day All! A year ago I bought a Grasshopper 720K for my big Yard. LOVE IT!! So this Spring I was able to find a old Grasshopper 1212 44" deck that needs some work. Got it going and took it down to Mom in laws to use on her yard. Kinda hilly, tires spin when going up a couple of the hills. My 720K has what is called a traction kit to take some weight from the mower deck and transfer it to the drive wheels. I found a kit for the 1212 but sure can't see anyplace on the mower or main frame with enough clearance to install it. This model has chain drives off the hydro pumps. Anybody know of an installation diagram or pictures of a 1212 with one on it? Google wasn't much help on his. Thanks in advance for your help!! This does seem to be the place to go for answer! Honda Clutch problems

Folks, first post but not even close to a forum new guy

Mower just stopped while using it and pull start wouldn't move
Checked everything and all is good.
So I sent it off to a shop and he doesn't get into these kind of problems but he cut the belt drive and it runs now anyway.
I had figured by this time that it is in the clutch mechanism and have it apart.
My question. :
My crank on my engine has 2 key way slots and when I took it apart i only see one and the Honda nation blow up only shows one.
Is there suppose to be 2??

I am sure I will have new questions

Snapper RER axel endplay

I'll start a thread and please give me a few days and I'll make some pics of my old Snapper and I'll show you how to get the axel endplay out of your old Snapper. If you have an old Snapper, grab the rear bumpers and rock the rear of the mower between the rear wheels. If the rear of the mower has more than 1/8" play between the rear wheels, It needs a little attention. That excessive play is wearing your axel gears down. Usually all you need to remedy that is about 3 or 4 nylon thrust washers #7011071YP, a flat screwdriver and a pair of scissors.. Do this and you will hopefully increase the life of your old Snapper and it will thank you for it.

Stihl FS 55 Weedtrimmer wount start

Hello! This is my first post, and I feel pretty desperate.

I have just recently changed the coil and the carb, they are both brand new. The coil is mounted in place, with the correct distance from the magnets.

After this repair, I got a spark out of it. But it still wount start. When I pull, I occasionaly get the random cough out of the exhaust, or a small bang. So it is misfireing. But I cant see how I can adjust this, and quite frankly I have run out of idêas.

Things I have tried;

Changed sparkplug ( 3 diffrent types )
Checked the muffler for crabonbuildup
Checked the cables for the igniton

I hope there are some clever minds here who could give me some good tips on how to proceed. I have uploaded photos of the exact carb and coil I have used.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for my English. I hope I could make myself understood :)s-l1600.jpgs-l1600 (1).jpg

4 years now trying to start mower

Hello. I have had yard service for the last 4 years, but now and needing to do myself. I have a 7 year old Toro Recycler with a B&S 6.5 (190cc) engine. In prepping it, I siphoned out all the old gas, got new gas, and replace the spark plug and air filter. After 40+ pulls, I still have a no start condition (its not even trying to turn over).
Thoughts? Could the fuel filter have gone bad> I ask as I pulled the air filter off again and when priming, and caught no sense it was truly priming.

Cub Cadet LT1045 hydrostatic adjustment

Cub Cadet LT1045 ground speed
I'm working on a Cub Cadet LT1045 for a friend of mine and it didn't want to pull him up a gradual slope so I replaced the drive belt and now it will spin out going up the hill. My problem is I don't have any power in reverse; it just barely creeps and that's on pretty much flat ground. Isn't there a way to adjust that? I tried turning that swivel mount up by the foot pedals but it didn't help. Could someone give me some advice on what and where I need to adjust so it will have some pulling power in reverse. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds. Your help will be appreciated.

What's the nuclear option for a leaking needle valve

I have written a few posts on my Hoinda GVC 160A problems. The carb needle valve will not shut the fuel off from the bowl . Last fall after many years of service the carb was leaking and the parts were equal to a new carb. I get gas flowing out the main jet of the carb. I first replaced the carb with a brand new OEM Honda. Then I ordered the suggested float that has a means to adjust the float level. I lowered the float level slightly hoping that would apply a little more pressure on the needle valve to seal closed.
With all this I still have a needle valve that will not seal the gas flow into the carb bowl.
Does anyone know of a solution? Is there a needle valve with a larger rubber tip or longer? Has anyone polished the carb body where the needle valve seats? Could the tank be pressurizing to cause the float not to seat?
I have a ME degree and worked on cars all my life but............
I am about ready to push this thing in a fire.

electric pto clutch cub cadet lt1024 problems

I have a LT 1024 cub cadet mower. Recently I noticed a very loud rattling noise from the front end. After further inspection i found that it is the electric PTO clutch rattling on the clutch bracket. It is very loud and gets worse with each mow. It does this with the deck off and both with PTO engaged or not. The blades do engage with no issues at all. When inspecting the pto you can move it side to side easily when the mower is off, it hits either side of the bracket. Is this a sign that something such as the PTO bearings or springs are going bad? Is the PTO itself going bad? Or should i take it off and make sure it is seated properly?

Mower doesn't like new customer

I picked up a good 4500 craftsman the other day. A farely newer model. Not one with a PTO. It had a 20hp OHV Briggs on it. Just a few minor things wrong with it. Valve adjustment, new fuel lines and filter. It ran great. After the valve adjustment, it started and ran great.
I sold it to a guy. He came and pick it up. It started fine when he got here. Said it started fine when he unloaded it. Later that afternoon, he called and said it wouldn't do anything, when he turned the key. So, the next morning, I drove all the way out there, (20 miles away). Got on it, and it fired right up.
I told him he'd just have to get used to certain things. I sort of figured that maybe he didn't have the clutch pressed all the way or something. Anyways, the next morning he called me and said it would turn over, but it would drag the battery down too fast for it to start.
Even though he knows there's no warranty on use mowers, he still wants me to drive all the way out there and fix it. And I'm not sure what it could be, because I've replaced the battery. Checked all the safety switches, adjusted the valves. And it worked great for me, every time.

GT 5000 PTO problem

I have a Craftsman GT5000, with a 27hp Briggs. I finally got the carburetor fixed and it's running awesome. When it was running bad, and I engaged the PTO, it would bog it down, until it died. Except for one time. I stayed running. Sluggish, but still ran the blades. So with the newer carburetor, I've got all the power I thought I needed.
But now, when I engage the PTO, even at the highest RPM's, it still bogs down the mower.

IMPORTANT: The PTO engages, and the blades spin for the 2 seconds it takes for the engine to bog down? Push the button in, and it fires right up.
I've read some about this, and some have had trouble with the seat safety switch. I had to by pass mine, because the new seat (off a different mower) didn't have the same type/size/shape of switch. Therefore, the one that came with the mower, would no longer fit.
If the mower cranks, with the seat switch bypassed, is there another part of a safety switch that needs to be jumped too?

The switch is a four in a row connection. Not two on top of two.

Or am I barking up the wrong tree with the safety switch?

P.S. This mower is one I'm keeping for myself. So I personally don't even have to have a safety switch.

Harbor Frieght pressure washer: impressions

This place is covered in moss and algae after a really wet spring and I knew I finally had to get a pressure washer to recover the driveway, sidewalk and wood deck. One day of a local specialist looked like it was getting close to the cost of a lower end washer. On line there are some write-ups, but most of the preferred gas units are $600 range. I saw a unit with the Honda cloned ohv single 221 cc engine, rated 3100 psi, yes the Predator. Which is a hate it or love it item here and elsewhere. Well, the checkout lady gave me a coupon and I bought a 2 year warranty, something I never do.

So far I have 11 hours on it after 2 sidewalks, a pebble cement driveway and half a wooden deck (300 square feet so far). I did read all the HF user comments before buying it. So far it has not missed a beat and is a demon on unwanted surfaces. Usual care must be exercised not to ruin paint and softwood.

The fittings , hoses, wand are first class so far. The engine is placed in the frame so that filling with oil and checking it is awkward. My biggest beef is that the engine is a cold blooded , hard starter. I still haven't solved the protocol, but it is strange in that in hot shutdown it must be choked and then starts right up. There is an oil switch which will not allow starting if low and will stop the engine. The manual is good English, but not organized well.

Yesterday at Lowes I happened to see a TroyBilt 3200 psi on sale for a little less than I paid. Yikes, it has the Honda OHC engine. A little remorse there.
I do remember they rated that unit down a bit, but I do not know why, maybe the pump. (And of course the HF unit was not mentioned-ha ha) I cannot tell a lie so more to follow, good or bad.

Edit. Hmmm...I wonder if the engine really is "cold" compared to our usual barbecue AC units. The pump is a big heat sink bolted to the block with cold water running constantly. The engine does have a fan on the front.

Flooding Carburetor

I tried getting some help the "my tractor forum" but no one came to my rescue. So I was browsing google looking for some answers and found this Site. I have a Tecumseh V-Twin VTV691 I believe its a 2000 WITH twin carburetors 640221's. No problem starting but when i increase the gas the carb on the right side facing the engine squirts gas up through the main vent tube and it starts loading up real bad. If I throttle back it will go back to idling okay, but as soon as I increase the gas it starts to load up and I see the gas squirting up thru the tube. I replaced the other carburetor already. I have cleaned the carb and vent tube extensively and no change. Can you tell me what causes this problem. Thank you and have a great day.

Is Raptor SD overkill for homeowner with 1 acre?

I've narrowed my choice to Hustler, now just have to choose which one.

I have 1 acre mowable, small incline in front yard (6' over 120'), flat the rest. A few trees, a shed and a pool to maneuver around.

Currently retiring a 42" lawn tractor, so anything is an improvement.

It seems to me the Raptor would be sufficient for my yard. I could swing the extra $$ for the SD, but not sure if it's really needed.

Reading through the posts, has me a little leary of the deck bolt issues on the Raptor.

Anyone have any experiences with a similar (or bigger) yard and the Raptor?

Thanks

How to install a dethatching blade on a B&D CM1836?

Hi,

I own a B&D CM1836 (http://ift.tt/2pqfsKc) and would like to use a dethatching blade.

I've bought 3 universal ones and none seem to fit as there's nothing to hold the blade on besides the 1 bolt. The normal blade has the black plastic thing that hugs the blade, but it won't fit on any dethatching blade.

Is there a dethatching blade out there for these mowers?

Thanks!

Walk behind Newbie Hydrostatic drive question (HRX217)

Hey guys... did my first mow with my new HRX217 last night, and WOW - I really like how smooth the transmission is. I particularly enjoyed feathering the drive speed by easing up on the drive handlebar as I got close to obstacles, etc.

My question is this - I haven't seen a firm statement anywhere in the searches I've done that indicate if partial throttle puts a greater load on the transmission, or causes more wear. In other words, if I am using the drive handlebar at partial positions for more than a few seconds at a time, is that a bad practice?

I'm probably being overcautious here, but after spending nearly $800 on a mower, I'm trying to baby it a bit.

WHAT FLUID IN A KUBOTA T1400h HST TRANSMISSION?

I just got an older Kubota T1400H OHV HST mower with the hydrostatic transmission. It needs a lot of work but I couldn't beat the price - free if I'd haul it away!! Also, I'm going to need some other parts to put this thing back into service. Any recommendations out there on good reliable parts suppliers?

Thanks.

How to get a gas tank off an old Tecumseh 6 HP motor

Hi All! I am new here and i hope someone here can help me with some questions I have on an old Sears Shredder / Bagger that appears to have an old Model #V60-70252H TECUMSEH Engine mounted on it. I want to get this old unit back working again and I know that since it has been sitting quite a while I should clean out the gas tank and the carburetor as well as change out the spark plug. Because the unit is so old I can't find much documentation on it but I did come across the diagram for the Model #V60-70252H TECUMSEH Engine, which appears to be the engine I have. I have been looking at both the diagram and the engine itself and I can't see how the tank is mounted or figure out how to get the tank off. Since the unit is so old I am also wondering if it would be smarter to just replace the carburetor, and if so, does anyone know where I can get a replacement? Or even a rebuild kit? I would also like to replace the spark plug but there isn't any marking on the existing one (that I can see) to know what to replace it with. Anyone have any ideas?Sears 6 hp Shredder Bagger.jpgShredder model number.jpgShredder motor info.jpghttp://ift.tt/2oQ1gqN

When is a hill too big to mow?

Looking through my owner's manual, I noticed a safe operating procedures warning about mowing on a grade and I think it said not to mow beyond a 15 degree grade. So I was curious about the big hill I mow, figuring it must be at least 10 or 12 degrees. I took a pic, opened Photoshop, drew a line and rotated it until it matched the hill. It turned out to be 21 degrees! No wonder my old mower huffed and puffed to get to the top. Last night I mowed it for the first time with my new mower — a 35 hp Scag Turf Tiger II — and the mower went up the hill like it was flat ground.

Obviously, it is a hill I mow straight up and down...and the down part is quite a ride. The hill looks small and not that steep in the picture but from the top looking down it feels very tall and very steep.

This is out by the road and on the other side of my driveway, the hill goes up above the road about 15 feet or so and there is a cliff where they cut out the hillside for the road. The top is level, then there is a slope and then another level spot about 6 feet wide before the drop off. In my first year I got too close to that slope and started sliding down toward the cliff. Thank goodness, when I hit the flat part the mover stopped and didn't go over. I didn't have ROPS or a belt then. Needless to say, that sloped area does not get mowed.

Anyone elso have any good hill stories?

pic of decal on top of engine for lawnboy 22" mower

Hey guys!! I usually hang out in the Lawn Boy section but got a Weed Eater high wheel 22" inch cut mower given to me the other day it is almost absolute excellent condition all that was wrong was the kill switch/engine brake cable was snapped and had to replace that one> It works and looks excellent he did a really good job of taking care of it but the sticker on the blower housing fell off. Gave up trying to find 1 online so I figured If I could get a pic of one and the dimensions I would go have 1 made. Would anybody here happen to be able to obtain a pic of that decal and post it for me?

Trouble starting Husqvara mower

Hi guys, I recently purchased a home and inherited a seldom used backup push mower as my first mower.

The mower in question is a Husqvara rotary lawn mower, model number 917.374420 it has the Briggs Stratton 4-cycle engine model number 122T02-0824-EA

When I first got the mower my father in law had fixed a stuck pin in the carburetor. On my first attempt to mow it started right up on the second pull.
The mower died about half way through mowing my lawn. It would start and run for a second before dying.

I opened up the carburetor and cleaned out the bowl and jets on the nut and put it back together. I was able to start it after that and finish mowing the lawn.
Two weeks later when I went to start the mower and it wouldn't start up.

It wouldn't even start for a few seconds before dying like it did before on the first mow job. This is pretty much where it stands now.
If I spray starter fluid into the air filter it will start right up and run perfectly until I shut it off. I was able to mow my front, back, and both side yards in one shot mulching last week before turning it off.

I have replaced:
air filter
carburetor
priming bulb
spark plug

I can see the primer shooting gas up tube in the carburetor. Because it starts with the starter fluid thats leads me to believe that the spark is OK but I don't have a tester for that.

I am running out of ideas and exhausting most options found form my research online for mowers that wont start. That is what got me here.
I would be happy to provide any additional information or pictures.
This is my first attempt to work on a small engine.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Interesting blurb regarding gasoline

Hi All,

While looking for parts on parts tree.com, this blurb on the bottom of the page was interesting;

Fuel Selection
Today's gasoline breaks down quickly. When it does, it leaves behind a thick varnish-like residue that adheres to the walls of its container, including the inside of the fuel system in your lawn equipment. Further, "regular" gas may have 10%, or more, alcohol, which attracts and blends with water, causing carburetor problems and the breakdown of lubricating mix-oils in 2-cycle equipment. Lawn equipment is especially prone to these fuel problems because the equipment is not run daily allowing time for the fuel to deteriorate and absorb water. For best results, avoid alcohol-blended fuels in 4-cycle lawn equipment and never use high-alcohol blends in your 2-cycle equipment. "Mid-grade" and "premium" fuels generally are not blended with alcohol.

Regards

Jeff

Put down too much Starter Lawn Food w/ Weed Preventer

Hello ya'll, I just got done clearing a section of our property at the back in order to put in a new fence for the dogs and make use of as much space as possible. So, there was a 65' X 15' section of over growth that I had just cleared, full of weeds, small trees, vines, old dried out twigs, sticks, branches, and small logs and managed to get it down to bare dirt. I was planning on putting down Scotts, Step 1 for seeding, starter lawn food w/ weed preventer, then after that I was going to spread some black dirt, top soil, and then spread grass seed, but I wanted to put down something to keep the weeds from coming back first. Well I read the bag and setting for the broadcast spreader on the back which said to put it on setting 7 which I did and ended up going through the whole bag, well when I was done as I was about to throw the bag out I saw on the bottom corner "Covers 5,000 Sq. Feet." So now I'm thinking Ooooh... Sh*t. I am not very familiar w/ lawns and lawn care, We usually have someone Mow ours, but now I'm not sure where I stand, how I should address this issue and what problems this is going to cause me as far as still being able to plant grass seed etc. Any advice on how I should handle this or what the hell I should do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and at the very least reading this thread.

Snapper "rider" not going into gear

Hey everybody,
I was at my local FFA auction and I was looking for an inexpensive lawn mower that I could get for my grandma and fell in love with this Snapper guy. Based on the serial on the Briggs it is a a 92, pretty old but the engine had compression so I went ahead and bought it. The day I got it I figured out that the carburetor was clogged, etc so I decided to throw it back into the barn until I had some free time. That time came, so I invited a friend and together we cleaned the carb, really easy job, changed the spark plug and got the mower running. Trouble is though the transmission is finicky. Most of the time I have to fight it to go from neutral to a gear, also when you strain the engine it also has gearing trouble. It's grinding actually. Not good at all I imagine. Is this a clutch issue? or something else in the transmission department? Sorry for my lack of experiance here but I usually use a hydro-static Kubota diesel. :P

Thanks to all in advance!
Ivan

Walk behind Honda Master Series HR 215 SXA Transmission Issue

I am the original owner of a Honda Master Series HR 215 SXA. I believe frame serial number is 6211077 (on aluminum tag behind engine on deck). Over the past 3 years and continuing to get worse regardless of what gear I am in (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) especially when engaging the self propel or going up an incline the transmission skips/ratchets trying to engage the rear wheels.
Once the wheels engage it works fine. The problem is not the ratchets on the ends of the driveshaft connecting the wheels. I have removed the tranny and separated the case. Now I am needing help on what to look for to figure out which gear is most likely worn out/skipping. Also what gear oil do you guys put back in after fixing them. Where do you find replacement parts. Thanks for any help.

Thoughts on Redesigned ZT XD?

After months of research I went home a few weeks ago with a brand spankin' new 2017 ZT XD. Looking for impressions from other owners, or folks that considered purchase.

Personally I am very impressed with the new design. Kudos to the Ariens/Gravely engineers. They obviously put a lot of thought into this one. It looks like they flowed down a lot of the ideas they incorporated into their Pro-Turn line a couple years ago. I really did not see much that competed with it at this price point.

Mower deck Scag Advantage Height Adjustment

Hello Everyone!

I'm brand new to the site and to the Scag World. I have done a lot of searching, reading and video watching and I still can't get a definitive answer. I just took ownership of a brand new Scag 36" walk-behind with an Advantage Deck. I am used to regular homeowner-type mowers and lawn tractors, so this whole experience is new to me. In referencing the manual and speaking with the dealer I purchased from, I am still confused on the correct way to adjust the cutting height of the mower. Things I've read say to adjust the spacers on the front caster wheels, but others contradict that and say that only adjusts the pitch of the deck (which to me, makes sense). Others state to add/remove the spacers underneath the deck where the blades are for the higher and lower cutting heights (which makes a little more sense to me). I'M NOT VERY HANDY OR MECHANICALLY INCLINED and I have read the manual and looked at the diagrams in the pictures, but don't really "get it". I have searched on YouTube for videos that may show or explain it a little more clearly, but that didn't work either. Could someone explain the proper procedure for me to actually adjust the height of the cut? I haven't even cut once with it, but don't want to mess anything up. I am a homeowner with about 1.5 acres. I like to cut at the highest height possible during the summer. On rare occasion, I need to also cut my parent's lawn and they like it a little lower than I do, hence the need for the adjustments. I should also mention that the deck itself is set to the highest cut setting (3-1/4" to 4-1/2"). Basically, how do I know if I'm cutting at 3 1/4" or 4 1/2" or anything in between? Any help, links, pictures, videos or diagrams are GREATLY appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Repairs Press pedal light stays on

Good afternoon all,

I am looking for repair advice for my cub cadet 1750 Hydo with a Kholer17 engine. I just purchased and I downloaded the manual and it states it won't start if the Press Pedal light is on. I started with the normal stuff has good spark, no fuel is coming out of the fuel pump, which I thought I needed to replace so I did some research and it also stated it would not start if the light is on. I have looked to see if the mower has a brake microchip to disengage the safety feature. Thanks all

Cub Cadet LT1024 issue with Electric clutch pto

I have a cub cadet LT1024 and the first time this season I mowed, everything was fine. The second i noticed a noise in the front, but was unable to pinpoint it. The third time the noise was noticeably louder. I found that it is the electric clutch PTO slamming against and vibrating against the clutch bracket. The PTO works and the blades engage with no problem. This also seems to be affecting the plate on the bottom of the mower that is attached to the steering linkage. I have attempted to tighten these and the will not tighten anymore. I have noticed on other tractor that there is a bolt or additional bracket that keeps the PTO from moving, but i do not see anything like this on the parts diagram. It does this whether the deck is attached or whether the PTO is engaged or not. Definitely appears to be getting worse. When the mower is off i can freely swing the PTO from side to side hitting each side of the current bracket. Am I missing a bracket or is this PTO going bad? thanks, Beau

Oil/Fuel Ratio decals for plastic cans and parts

wide and I have a harder time locating the proper ration for each piece of equipment so I made some of these today with a material made to adhere to the plastic like on new gas cans and equipment that is notoriously hard to get decals to adhere to (known as low energy plastice). These are laminated to make them solvent resistant and once area is cleaned good before application with rubbing alcohol should stay adhered extremely well - we stick this material for atv and kayak decals in small qty because of it is expensive. I made a few extras that I will offer

$4.50 for 1 big and 2 small of either but can make custom amounts and give a quote
$6.50 if you want a set of each

right now I have made 40:1 and 50:1

large decal is 1.73" tall by 4" wide
smaller decals for equipment are .43" x 1"

Engine John Deere LX176

Have to crank engine for 30 seconds before it starts. Any suggestions?

Engine John Deere LX176

Crankshaft bolts/nuts on various models

First of all, can someone tell me why B&S is no longer installing recoil starters on lawnmowers? At least on 17.5 HP and up models. This is very handy when you discover that the battery has bit the dust after the winter and you really need to mow your yard that particular day before going back to work the following day or you're like me and you're too cheap (or frustrated) to buy a new battery every other year.

When did Briggs and Stratton went from using nuts to bolts on the crankshaft/flywheel?

Reason I ask is I have this nutty idea to made a rope starter for one of my lawnmowers. Most likely my MTD 17.5 B&S engine. I also have a 21 hp B&S Husqvarna. I'd like to do both.

I have a 14hp B&S circa 2000 that threw a rod through the block. It looks like the rod bearing nuts were not properly torqued or had Locktite from the factory and vibrated loose which sent the rod through the block. The engine was less than 5 years old.

This engine is on a shelf in my storage building and I'm going to have to move some stuff to get to it and pull the cooling shroud off to find out.

The plan is to:

1) Drill a hole through the side of a socket and the crankshaft bolt for a roll pin or cotter pin.
2) Up through the socket will be a 1/2" carriage bolt threads facing upwards. Maybe a few flat washers to take up any slack in the depth of the socket.
3) Use a pulley that uses a square keystock to keep from spinning
4) Grind a slot in the end of the carriage bolt for the keystock.
5) Cut a groove at an angle for the knot on the end of a rope.

This winter I pulled my batteries off my mowers and hooked them to trickle chargers. Hoping I can get more than 1 to 2 years out of these horribly cheap lawnmower batteries everybody sells.

As long as I have the strength and ability to pull start a lawnmower engine, I'd just soon do that as to keep spending money on these junk batteries.

I think my Interstate battery made it one season. The Husky battery from Lowes (I think) made it 2 years before it bit the dust.

The battery on that same Snapper went bad after a year and I just pulled started it for 10 years until I sold it.

Not Looking Good

I have a Craftsman lawn tractor Model # 917.270514. It's a 14.5 HP Briggs & Stranton engine. I just started having trouble with it, it runs for a few minutes and dies. I took the carb. off and it seemed clean enough. I then noticed that the gas tank was empty when I just filled it up. I emptied the crank case and it was full of gas. Is there a way to fix this?

Bob-Cat FastCat 61" blade engagement

Hello all, I'm a new member to this forum as well as a new owner of a used Bob-Cat Fast Cat RZ 61" B&S 810 cc. The manufacturer tells me that by the serial number it's a 2011 model. It has 27 hours on it and looks new. No rust, no dents near perfect paint and everything that's not painted is shinny. It was keep indoors all it's life, except for 27 hrs. of course. I did have to replace the carb due to not being ran and old gas varnish.
Okay, I think that gives you more background than you need for my question. I have never been around a zero turn mower before or any mower that has an electric blade engagement. I'm assuming it's an electro magnet. When I flip the engagement switch it engages immediately, no gradual blade speed up or clutch-slip action but NOW! Quite dramatic for someone who's used to a Snapper garden tractor. Is this the normal blade hook-up or is something wrong with the PTO?
All suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I'm afraid that this will damage the mower.

Thanks in advance,
Russell

No throttle response

Hi, I have a 16.5hp briggs and stratton engine on my ranch king lawn mower. Model 31377 0163-e1 010111ze. The mower runs good but for some reason i have no throttle response when moving the lever. I've tried adjusting the governor by loosening the nut and turning the drive clockwise. I can control the throttle by manually turning it above the carb. when going up a hill it will adjust a little bit. Also when the engine is partially choked i can then adjust the throttle. It is a manual choke btw. I have read something about the governor/ throttle linkage spring that connects to the governor arm and above the throttle plate and mine is broken and the spring is just loose on the linkage. Is this my issue? I dont really see what the spring would even do for me honestly. Any help appreciated.

Landscaping Plastic - How Close to Young Trees?

I recently purchased a home and in the backyard there is a row of young Hemlock tress. I noticed that some of the trees (those on a bit of a hill) are not looking very healthy; whereas those on flat land are looking good. Taking a closer look, I found that there is non-porous landscaping plastic beneath the mulch around the trees, and it comes to within about 2 inches of the tree trunk. My theory is that the plastic is not allowing enough water to get to the roots of the trees. Does anyone have any advice on if and by how much I should cut the plastic back from the trees?

Reverse Bypass Button

As a proud new owner of a JD 180 LT I just took her out to give it a trial run, Worked Great! My question is I have never owned anything with a reverse kill switch much less one with a bypass so you can back up by pushing a button anyway. I have read that these modern safety functions are to keep from running children or anything over in reverse with the blades engaged? Maybe there is more to this theory but in my mind to install a reverse cutout switch then install a bypass button on the dash seems to make the problem worse. I can back up and turn my head and upper body fairly well to watch what's behind me but make me lean forward to push that button while holding onto the steering wheel plus run the hydro pedal with my foot! I can tell you that with all those points of contact not even a very limber person can turn their head to the rear to watch for any obstacle behind them.

Can anyone explain what I'm missing?

Thanks

Mower died and will not start; Exhaust rocker off

Hi,
I have a HR215-HE mower with a GXV140 engine. Had it out for the first time year over the weekend. Checked the oil and air cleaner as always. Started right up. Cut half the yard then it died and would not restart. I changed the gas, cleaned the carb, replaced the plug, and verified spark and cutoff switch was functioning. Still would not start. On a whim I pulled the valve cover off and the rocker for the exhaust valve was not seated on the push rod and exhaust valve. Any ideas what would cause this? The rod looks okay but I can't seem to get it to seat properly on the lifter valve so I can move the rocker into place? Any thought?

Have a question and no one seems to no the answer, not even the dealers. My rear lawnmower has 5 cutting heights. It goes from 1.5 to 4. I'm trying to figure out what cutting height 2 3 and 4 are. engine issues on Husqvarna RZ4623 riding mower

I have multiple issues on my machine. I intended to mow my lawn for the first time this year this past weekend. Prior to doing so, I changed the oil and replaced the oil filter. Late in the year last fall, I was having issues getting the mower to start, and when I turned the key to the off machine, the engine still continued to crank. It didn't matter if I engaged the blades, took the emergency brake off, got off the seat - the engine still cranked. It wasn't until I disconnected the battery that it stopped. Fast forward to last weekend: After I changed the oil and filter, I thought that I would try starting the mower. Low and behold....it started right up! I was low on gas and my wife went and got some gas for me while I begun mowing. I went for 20 minutes without an issue. My wife returned with the gas and I put the e-brake on and filled the tank with the mower still running. Within a minute, the engine started pulsating, revving up and down, before finally stalling. I tried starting the mower several times, but it would only start, run a couple seconds, and stall again. Thinking that I maybe had stirred something up, I went out and purchased a new fuel filter and air filter. After replacing them, same issue. Then I would turn the key, and nothing would happen. When it finally did begin cranking again, it wouldn't start. Then the cranking after the key was off began again and I drained the battery. After pulling the battery and charging it, I tried starting the mower again, and it fired right up. Sensing a miracle, I ran in the house to grab my ear muffs. By the time I returned about a minute later, the engine had stalled. Now I can't even get it to crank. That's the best info that I can give you. I think I have multiple issues: bad ignition, bad solenoid and/or water/dirt in my fuel (I did put a little dry gas in the tank prior to the last time it ran for a minute). Does anyone have any suggestions on the proper way to attack the problem?
