Brute wont start

It actually started for 3 seconds twice. It had a lot of smoke but stopped. I could not start it anymore, it does not crank. This is what i have done with my lawnmower so far

changed filter
changed spark plug

When i unplug the spark plug, i get the same sound. How can i check is ignition coil is working?
